Barge supervisor is responsible for overseeing all operations on a barge, ensuring the safety of the crew, maintaining vessel stability, and managing daily activities by assigning tasks, monitoring performance, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations and company procedures while the barge is in operation, typically in offshore environments like construction or oil and gas operations; they also play a key role in training crew members and resolving any issues that may arise on board.

Key responsibilities of a barge supervisor:

Crew management: Supervise the barge crew, assigning tasks efficiently, and monitoring their performance to maintain high operational standards. Barge foreman is responsible for overseeing the daily operations on a work barge, ensuring all tasks are performed safely and efficiently, including managing the crew, assigning work, monitoring safety compliance, and coordinating with other teams to complete marine construction projects on the barge; essentially acting as the leader and supervisor of all activities taking place on the barge. Key responsibilities of a barge foreman:

Crew supervision: Directly manage and oversee the barge crew, assigning tasks, monitoring performance, and addressing any issues that arise. Safety compliance: Enforce all safety regulations on the barge, ensuring proper use of equipment and procedures to prevent accidents.

Clarify Responsibilities: Clearly define job roles and responsibilities to avoid misunderstandings. 2. Promote Teamwork: Encourage a collaborative environment where team members support each other beyond their official duties.

Perform necessary Rigging study work, categorize the handling and lifting operations, review Heavy / Critical Lift Studies and calculations, technically evaluate subcontractors. Heavy/ Critical Lifting Plan and activities.

Liaises with concerned personnel (client, company, subcontractors) on project scope, execution and progress. Carry out a review of Method Statements, Risk Assessment and Job Safety Analysis plan produced by the Lifting Subcontractors. Works in line with Company HSE Policy, ensures Sub Contractors subordinates are aware of, and comply with HSE procedures, rules and regulations for Rigging / Lifting activities. Responsible for the assessment of heavy/critical lifting operations to ensure that planning, selection of cranes and lifting equipment and accessories, instruction and supervision as necessary is in place to enable the lifting task to be safely executed. Ensure that Transportation and Lifting operation strategies are followed and that operations are carried out in accordance with Project Specific procedures. Monitor the lifting operations to ensure that they are being carried out in accordance with approved Rigging Study, established Work Method Statement, Risk and Job Safety Analysis. Frequent contact with Site Team Leaders and Supervisors in exchanging information and suggestions related to the developing and maintaining lifting equipment inspection, Maintenance and operating systems, processes and procedures to ensure they are fit for purpose. Deliver presentations to site to demonstrate how the lifting plans are to be used. Monitor the Sub Contractors Task Instruction / Tool Box Talk prior to perform any lifting operations. Provides technical expertise, identifies the necessary training requires to implement Safe Rigging / Lifting Operations, in able to support and encourages the practical application of competency based development.

Provide and conduct Rigging and Lifting Training / Refresher Courses. Conduct a quarterly audit on Safe Rigging and Lifting Practices and Lifting gears inspection. Demonstrate initiative in resolving both immediate and long term site issues regarding Rigging and Lifting systems and their practical implementation. Attend client and company management meetings on and off site regarding site rigging issues. Participate in TOP SET investigation involving rigging personnel. Ensures that all activities carried out by my subordinates are performed in accordance with client’s safety rules.

Identify risk and liaise with Safety Officer to get the Task Risk Assessment prepared and approved by client.

Towing / installation of SBM, Sub Sea Hose, Floatation bead and Yokohama fenders. Operation, preparation of Tagger winch, air compressor and other associated rigging equipment and accessories.

Removal of marker buoy and pendant wire sling using crane and tagger winch. Obtaining chain degree and chain link cutting using crane and winch. Chain link angle reading, SBM pressure and leak test, Sub Sea hose dressing / tie in. Regular inspection and maintenance of tools / tackles, and rigging equipment. Coordinate directly all works and procedures with Air/Saturation Diving Supervisors and Superintendent. Established safe work practices and educate all concerned to follow the same. Develop and implement policy and procedure in the areas of responsibility. Supervise and coordinate activities of workers engaged in wiring and repairing antenna systems for radio communications and radio and television broadcasting. Interact with and coordinate efforts between the Task Force personnel and heavy equipment and crane operators. Adhere to all safety procedures.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Responsible for own safety as well as that of the crew. Attend and participate in all pre-tour, post tour and weekly safety meetings. Demonstrate and Promote Safety Leadership for team members. Inspect and train crane crew to inspect safety apparatus and equipment. Understands and adheres to correct lock-out, tag-out procedures. Ensure all lifts are within load limits of equipment and are correctly rigged, and lifting gear is properly color coded prior to use.

Assist in the orientation and training of new Roustabouts regarding helicopter safety, high noise area safety, appliance use, lifeboat assignment, general alarm, etc. Assist in organizing, planning and monitoring the work of the crane crew.
