Postgraduate research

The study done at post graduate was an observational study to determine the short

termtreatment outcome on non- surgical management of talipes equinovarus (clubfoot)

at Beitcure Hospital in Lusaka and Lewanika General Hospital in Mongu.

The study looked to assess the success of congenital talipes equinovarus deformity

and correction and establish the level of function after six weeks.

The study was a quantitative prospective cohort which employed observational

methods. 21children, 32 feet with 53% bilateral involvement of the feet were enrolled

in the study. The severity of the deformity, the structure and function of the foot

where measured at the onset of treatment and after 6 weeks of Posenti treatment. The

Pirani measuring scale (measuring the severity of the deformity) and the clubfoot

assessment protocol were used. The T paired test was used to measure the difference

in the deformity of the feet before and after treatment. A p valueof <0.05 was

considered significant after measuring the success of the correction.

The statistical analysis and results showed 40% of the participants where aged below

6 months old with mean age of 1.8months. 61.9% of the participants were male.

Severity of the feet improved from 59% at the initial presentation to 9% severe

deformity at the final with a p value of 0.000. Morphology of the foot also showed

improvement with tibial rotation scoring

improvement with p value 0f 0.04, 0.02 and 0.009 respective.

The conclusion was that there was significant improvement in both the structure and

function of the foot within a short time of Posenti method of clubfoot correction in the

first 2 years of a

child’s life.
