Chief Hydroelectric Plant Operator (Manager)

The Chief HEP Operator manages and oversees the supervision and operations of the pumping plant operations units at San Joaquin Field Division main facilities.
nPlans the work of others, schedules to ensure operational continuity, trains, supervises and coordinates the work of the control center. Ensures continuity in the implementation of operating policies and procedures in the plant and throughout an operation and maintenance zone.
nIn charge of technical training of the Plant Operations personnel, including the safe clearance procedures. Also, responsible for adequate safety meetings, literature and films and making decisions regarding safe working conditions.
nEnsures that schedules of water releases, pumping and generation are carried out. Implements general policy and procedure directive from the Hydroelectric Plant Operations Superintendent.
nReviews, revises and coordinates daily pumping/generating schedule for water/power deliveries to the local contractors. Reviews annual outages, requested outages, and out of service equipment to guarantee efficient coordination between maintenance and water delivery.
nApplied knowledge of functional characteristics of generating and pumping units and auxiliary machinery, busses, switches, control circuits, valves, checks, reservoirs, spillways, metering and other water control devices. General understanding of the fundamentals of electricity and hydrology.
nOperate with contractors on meeting customer service demands/needs.
Senior Hydroelectric Plant Operator
Department of Water Resources – State of California 2016 - 2021
Working independently under the direction of the Chief HEP Operator, the Senior HEP Operator monitors, directs and oversees the operation and control of the aqueduct facilities and hydroelectric generating and pumping plants within the San Joaquin Field Division.
nImplements general policy and procedure directives from the Chief HEP Operator or Superintendent; receives operating orders and other directives from Control Center and coordinates interconnecting utilities for load changes and with other zones; trains subordinates.
nStarts, synchronizes, regulates, stops and secures generators and pumping units; controls aqueduct flow by remotely controlled checks and turnouts; monitors or operates a digital process controller for actual control and/or optimization of plant and aqueduct output and flow; opens and closes circuit breakers, disconnects and grounds switches, and tests for feedback.
nPrepares and issues intraplant clearances and executes clearances; makes decisions regarding safe working conditions and enforces compliance with safety regulations; ensures that schedules of water releases, pumping and generation are carried out.
nMaintains a station log, records and reports on operations, calculates power and water flows as necessary to complete assigned schedules.
