CREDIT SUISSE
Senior Oracle DBA - Risk & Finance Systems Aug 2015 – May 2017
Returned to Credit Suisse to initially upgrade Risk databases from 11.2.0.2 to 11.2.0.4 and RHEL5 to RHEL6 in EMEA, with largest database size in excess of 35TB.
At a very high level migration strategy used was a combination of RMAN duplicate to target & Goldengate replication using downstream capture due to compressed table in 11.2.0.2 source database.
This project also involved setting up 150+ full sized clone environments using NetApps SMO cloning technology and replicating data to APAC (via Dataguard) due to a regulatory requirement.
This is the largest database migration to have ever been undertaken within the bank and was delivered successfully. This migration not only provided the much needed capacity uplift for Risk Applications, but also resulted in 3.6m CHF save over the next 3 years.
The second project I have been working on is with Cloudera on the Big Data/Hadoop platform. This has required migrating PostgreSQL to Oracle RAC 12c, developing the cross site DR solution for Cloudera.
Working very closely with Cloudera consultants to align the software to meet the internal standards of CS, this involves use of PKI certificates, LDAP for the following services Oozie, Hue, NAV, NAVMS, SCM, RMAN, HIVE, SENTRY, REPLICATION and AMON.
Senior Oracle Projects DBA Feb 2013 – Feb 2015
Initially, returned to Credit Suisse to upgrade Global Derivatives Trade flow databases in APAC, AMER and EMEA from 10g to 11g. It was a very complicated upgrade due to the presence of bi-directional Streams replication and Dataguard for standby database and using flashback clone technology. This upgrade was delivered successfully across two successive go-Live weekends.
Defined standards and automated checkouts for DBAs to ensure cluster builds conform to Engineering standards when are received from the databases provisioning team. This resulted in stabilising production environments as build issues could be spotted and fixed before those
Migrated 16 production databases from 10g to 11g using a variety of migration strategies of datapump, Dataguard and transportable tablespaces depending upon their size.
Assisted in defining standards & monitoring templates for 12c Oracle Enterprise Manager, and managed rollout of monitoring via OEM 12c.
Managed Oracle DBA Book of Work (BOW) for all in-flight projects. This involved scoping new projects, managing new capacity and allocating to DBA resources within the team.
CENTRICA
Senior Oracle DBA – Cheltenham Migration Project Oct 2010 – Feb 2013
Project Cheltenham involved, migrating all the services from T-SYSTEMS datacentres to the new vendor (HP) datacentres. This was a Greenfield site, where we stood up the servers installed the oracle software and then migrated Oracle production databases using an oracle product called oracle-2-oracle (o2o). A new monitoring and alerting infrastructure was setup with each new system at minimum 11.2.0.2 on Linux Redhat 5.5 and 6.2, using Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g.
My duties and responsibilities included:
oInstallation and configuration of 12c Enterprise Manager with MAA architecture using 4 OMS’s, Zeus load balancer & physical Dataguard. Setting up monitoring templates and interfacing with BMC Patrol to forward notifications to Service Now to raise incidents.
oEngineered scripts that integrate OMS under CRS control, and scripted for Oracle Goldengate replication standards/framework & monitoring
oSetup Database as a Service (DBaaS), self-serve portal and integrated monitoring of Exadata X3 servers and ZFS Sun Storage Appliances with 12c OEM.
oCreated databases onto Exadata x3 platform using RMAN duplicate. Undertook several performance tests for IOPs throughput, checking configuration of database servers, InfiniBand switches & cell servers. Maintaining ASM storage via cell administrator.
oDevised standards for presenting ASM LUNS by HP.
oEngineered Strategy and Rollout of RMAN Database backup solution using HP Dataprotector.
oUndertook several Oracle 11G RAC/ASM/Dataguard Build and Migration of key systems to HP Datacentres for both Centrica and British Gas residential billing systems implementing MAA architecture with Fast Start Failover Enabled (Observer server was in 3rd datacentre at Verizon).
oUtilised oracle-2-oracle (o2o), migration utility to migrate database from T-System to HP Datacentres, some of these databases were in excess of 30TB
oInstalled and configured Oracle Restart, HA architecture, for systems with a longer RPO.
oRecommended and implemented performance-tuning strategies. Memory management, object sizing and design implications.
