Recruitment Team,

My name is Timothy Retting and I am a PhD candidate in economics at the University of Wyoming, with a background in modeling, computation, and causal inference. I am eager to transition into an industry-based or policy-based role to apply and expand my data skills in real-world settings.

The empirical portion of my dissertation research is all about uncovering causal links between zoning changes, permitting rates, and home values. It demands an understanding not merely of the methodology, but a willingness to think creatively about factors and models underlying the movement of the data. The work involves pulling together unique datasets from publicly available sources and applies methods from the causal-inference toolkit to determine if policies implemented actually achieve the policymakers’ goals. My results are then used to calibrate a “home-voter” model meant to explore the ways in which these upzoning policies make residents better or worse off. I am proficient in Python, R, MATLAB, and SQL, with experience handling GIS data and collaborating in academic research teams. Through my work, I have learned how to ask the right questions and build the tools required to explore them. I am coachable, attentive, and bring the best out in other people. Thank you for considering my application; I look forward to discussing how my background and skills align with your goals. Feel free to visit http://andyretting.org—you will see my projects and a summary of my current work.

Sincerely,

Timothy (Andy) Retting
