Aug 2006 to May 2023 Associate/Assistant Professor, University of Bridgeport.

Associate Professor of Global Development, University of Bridgeport. Chair of MA in Global Development & Peace, College of Public & International Affairs. Taught graduate courses: Development Economics, International Human Rights, Corruption. Supervised theses.

Taught undergraduate courses: International Human Rights, Diplomacy & Foreign Policy, United Nations Studies.

Mentored graduate students and undergraduates. Took top students on as research assistants, preparing them for further graduate study, careers in research, and the law.

Innovated simulations of United Nations Security Council and General Assembly meetings and decision-making about issues pertaining to international peace and security, ranging from crises to climate change. This taught students nuances of diplomacy and negotiation, critical self-analysis, and critical problem-solving skills.

During this period, set up the MA program through its infancy. Worked at helping students to build career opportunities in diplomacy, law, international trade, and academia. Built ties with the United Nations for visits by UN experts to speak in closed and open fora at the University through the Global Development & Peace program. Also worked with the United Nations Department of Public Information for students to have technical briefings by UN experts (August 2008 – May 2010).

Honors Program faculty member. Gave sections of courses designed for Honors students. Innovations included moot international court; simulations in negotiation and mediation; addressing international conflicts; drafting foreign policy papers for US President and for UN Secretary General.

Had students dissect documentaries to parse authoritative sources, secondary sources, fact and opinion, and problem-solving.

Chair, B.A. in International Political Economy and Diplomacy program (Jan 2008 – May 2010). Transformed program from a regionally-focused program to one that concentrated on themes, theory, and deeper understanding of International political economy and negotiation/mediation. Built a competitive program whose graduates went on to doctoral programs, law schools, MBA programs, and other graduate programs. Many went on to careers in the international private sector, working with multinational enterprises.

Wrote handouts that helped colleagues develop and expand teaching of critical thinking, analytic research, and synthetic writing skills for College of Public & International Affairs.

As Chair, I managed the faculty committee in the SPIA that recommended non-ternured faculty members for reappointment, promotion, tenure, termination and promotion matters.

2019 Chair, School Personnel Committee Chair (School of Public & International Affairs).

2018 Chair, College Personnel Committee Chair (College of Public & International Affairs & Shintaro Akatsu School of Design).

This committee made recommendations to the Dean of the College, the University Personnel Committee (all faculty), and Provost regarding reappointment, promotion, tenure, or termination of non-tenured faculty members, and promotion matters vis a vis tenured faculty members.

2013-15 Chair, College Personnel Committee Chair (College of Public & International Affairs & Shintaro Akatsu School of Design).

2014-15 Chaired committee to design Ph.D. in Public & International Affairs for the College of Public & International Affairs.

2012-15 Faculty Council President. Elected to a second term in 2014. Initiated efforts to have Council representatives and administrators establish a grievance committee that would guide the university about procedures to address grievance issues that did not fall into the ambit of RPT or HR matters.

Oversaw all the work of the Faculty Council. Represented the Council in meetings with the Provost and President of the university. Led the Council in redesigning the Course Evaluation Form to shift focus from professor to learning outcomes. Led revisions to the Faculty Handbook, which were presented to the University Handbook Committee.

2011 Chaired roundtable on Best Practices in Teaching, Faculty Development Day, (September 27). Presented best practices approaches to teaching and mentoring for benefit of non-tenured faculty, although I was not yet tenured.

2009 Presentation to Bridgeport International Academy, Bridgeport, CT – ‘The United Nations’ (March 19th).

2009 Recognition award by Undergraduate Student Government Association at annual Student Leadership Awards Ceremony, University of Bridgeport, (April 23rd).

2009 Workshops with Undergraduate Student Government Association – Role of Student Government, and Robert’s Rules of Order, University of Bridgeport, (Jan 31 & Mar 2). Workshops were intended to educate student government leaders about representation of the people, rules of parliamentary procedure, negotiating with university administration, accountability, transparency.

2008-12 Managing Editor, Journal of Global Development and Peace. I was the inaugural managing editor. Identified peer reviewers and established an editorial review board.
