Researched and reported on the accuracy of Mark Twain National Forest’s Pattern-Recognition (PATREC) computer model designed to predict the impact of forest management practices on three avian species indicative of specific habitat types (eastern bluebird for open grassland, indigo bunting for field/forest borders, and ovenbird for interior forest habitat) in six forest compartments, using the plot-mapping survey method. This involved:

Learned habitat types of the Ozark Highlands region of southern Missouri

Learned song patterns of the three avian species studied

Plotted transects representative (in terms of percentage habitat per compartment) of the six forest compartments studied

Walked through forest transects, listening for territorial songs, watching for the birds and their nests, and mapping the bird territories using the plot-mapping survey methods

Interpreted the results of agreement or significant differences found between predicted and actual numbers of the avian indicator species in a summary report for the Mark Twain National Forest under the supervision of Ernie Wiggers, Ph.D., for college credit at the University of Missouri-Columbia
