Experience Summary

Over 25 years of experience as an IT professional, with a focus on modern server and data center infrastructure, including server and storage virtualization, security technologies, cloud frameworks, blade systems, modern data protection and disaster recovery systems, and storage area networks. I have a long history of staying ahead of trends, and rapidly being able to adapt to new concepts and capabilities in the IT industry. I am known and respected amongst my peerage for my unconventional nature, far-reaching insight, and my extreme depth of understanding of many aspects of IT technology, as well as my relentless work habits, adaptability, and sheer stamina.

I have a history of professional level credentials in Microsoft, Cisco, CWNP, and VMware, with a tendency for aggressive self-education and accreditation in multiple fields. Until recently I was Amazon AWS Solutions Architect Associate, AWS Developer Associate, AWS Sysops Associate, Cisco CCNA-Routing&Switching, CCNP-Routing&Switching, CCDA, CCDP, VMware VCP-DCV3/4/5/6, VCP-Cloud5, VCP6-NV, Microsoft MCP:XP, MCSE:2003, Security+, and CWNP's CWNA and CWSP certifications (most were maintained simultaneously). I recently allowed most of them them to expire, as well as many minor Cisco and VMWare partner certs, as priorities shift and my career has evolved. I am constantly pursuing new interests and educating myself on modern technological paradigms as they emerge, and my understanding of the deep concepts driving most of modern technology is unrivaled by my peerage. Actively working on multiple advanced AWS certifications, as well as CKA/CKAD/CKS (Kubernetes), CCSP (Cloud Security), and CCSK (Cloud Security) certifications at this time with a focus on container and cloud infrastructure and security. My focus for new skills right now includes AWS, Docker, Ansible, Terraform, Kubernetes, Python, SDN, container networking and security, service meshes, serverless, distributed applications and databases, NFV, AIOps, and DevSecOps tools/skills. There is very little I have not seen in the field or am not familiar with, and I am constantly keeping an eye on new developments.

I am a huge advocate for what I like to call Full Cycle Systems Engineering, and tend to try to keep all the moving parts and aspects of an environment in mind during design and implementation. I refuse to build systems that cannot be maintained in a sane fashion, and have a long history of engineering for scale, resilience, recoverability, and agility; no system should be one off, and no system should be unmaintainable, or require major disruption to update or make changes in modern infrastructures.

Key Technology Areas:

●Expert in server virtualization technology, with over 19 years of production experience with VMWare server technologies, and 25 years of exposure to virtualization applications and testing/pilot server virtualization environments (from beta days of VMware workstation, ESX and GSX). Some of my experiences include P2V and V2V migrations using a variety of tools, ESX/ESXi clustering with Virtual Center/vCenter, upgrades/updates/version migrations, VMWare Horizon/View desktop deployments, SRM testing and configuration, the deployment of templates and clones, advanced load balancing/trunking, NAS, iSCSI and FC storage, hyperconverged infrastructure, resource automation, and security and network infrastructure best practices. Deep experience with NSX-V and NSX-T, VXLAN and distributed network functions concepts (DLR, DFW, etcl, and with the until-recently deprecated vCloud Director product (5.x, 8.x, 9.0). I have primarily been a virtual infrastructure professional and consultant for the last 18+ years. A large percentage of my projects have involved consolidation and optimization of virtual resources; I tend to clean up a lot of poor implementations by other virtualization professionals, getting them operational and maintainable, and integrated with the culture and knowledgebase of my client companies/employers.

●As a longtime supporter of the cloud infrastructure concept, I have been tracking the progress of the relevant technologies for the last 20+ years, testing each generation and educating clients and co-workers along the way. I have been engineering and selling (primarily) VMWare solutions conceptualized as internal clouds for enterprises for over 18 years, using the ability to mix different pieces of hardware into aggregated resource pools, and the flexible live migration automation and high availability capabilities to provide for great value adds to IT departments still uncomfortable with the concepts and complexity of these systems.

●Great deal of work around “cloud-native” application architectures and optimal design for AWS. Worked around several large-scale AWS players, and worked on integrations and optimizations around several projects, including hybrid and multi-cloud. Consulted and advised on public vs private options and optimal configurations, and cost modelling. Experience with AWS DR with tools such as Zerto, and site resiliency via public cloud. I am not an expert in Azure or Google Cloud, but I have worked in vast production AWS environments, using an array of AWS services and additional third party tooling, such as Aqua Security, Hashicorp Vault, Packer, and Terraform, Nginx Plus, and various cost optimization tools.

●High degree of experience with storage network technologies, with over 25 years of experience implementing and managing iSCSI and Fibre Channel SAN's. I have built and implemented many Compellent SAN's, using iSCSI, FC, and SAS storage technologies, and have also used a variety of other NAS/SAN systems from EqualLogic, HP, Openfiler, FreeNAS, Nexenta, Sun, Pure Storage, and Network Appliance. Some experience with HCI technologies from Simplivity, Springpath, and Hedvig, some VMWare VSAN, Datacore, Atlantis.

●Over 25 years of Cisco networking technologies, with a focus on server room/datacenter environments. I am familiar with Cisco Catalyst (fixed, stackables, and chassis), Nexus, and MDS switches, Cisco Routers, ASA/Sourcefire firewalls, IDS/IPS, and VPN's, and to a lesser extent newer ASR series. I am also familiar to a lesser extent with Arista switches, Mellanox switches, HP Procurve switches, Dell/Force10, Juniper/Netscreen firewalls and VPN's, Palo Alto, Sonicwall firewalls and VPN's, and Fortigate firewalls. My knowledge includes experience with VLANs and trunks, Jumbo Frames, HSRP/VRRP/GLBP, VDC’s, VSAN/FC Zoning, channel bonding/load balancing techniques, end-end QOS, Multicast routing, security hardening, ACL's, inter-VLAN routing, VRF’s, Private VLANs, BGP EVPN, QnQ tagging in datacenters, MPLS, VPLs, VPNs, and other skills relevant to server room and data center infrastructure in various L2-L3 configurations and scales. Great deal of experience with VXLAN concepts and technologies at the switch layer, including interVXLAN Routing, static and dynamic tunnels, and integration with SDN frameworks and with NSX (via OVSDB agents). Some experience around RoCE on Mellanox switches as well, for HPC and storage.

●25 years of Windows Server experience including everything from NT 4.0 through Windows 2016 and beyond. I have a deep background in Windows applications and services, including Active Directory and Group Policy management, DNS, DHCP, IAS, VSS, DFS, clustering, Terminal Services, SQL, IIS, Project Server, Sharepoint, and to a lesser extent with Exchange. I have a great deal of experience with user profile management via Group Policy, including occasional use of VBScript, WMI, and Powershell. I have built and managed hundreds of Windows servers over the course of my career, and am very familiar with licensing and integration requirements for both physical and virtual infrastructure environments. I have a great deal of experience fixing broken/corrupted AD replication configurations.

●25 years of occasional Linux and UNIX, mostly using CentOS and Red Hat Enterprise Linux, but occasional use of AIX, Ubuntu Linux, Debian, Mac OSX, FreeBSD, and OpenBSD UNIX. I have limited knowledge of Tcl/Expect, Perl, and Bash shell scripting, and am trying to find time to learn Python. I have functional experience with common applications/services including Apache, nginx, RabbitMq, Cassandra, kafka, Tomcat, Jboss, MySQL (including Galera, MariaDB), PostgreSQL, HAproxy, Netfilter/IPTables, Samba, OpenLDAP, FreeRADIUS, Snort, NFS, Nagios NMS, Cacti, BIND, dhcpd, sshd, rsyslog, syslog-ng, logrotate, cobbler, etc. Some experience with new subsystems such as cloud-init.

●Several years of IDS/IPS and security analysis experience, using Snort, Honeyd/HoneyNet, Linux IPTables, Labrea Tarpit, Sebek, Nessus, portmap, nmap, ethereal/wireshark, tcpdump, etc. Great deal of background in security theory and best practices, which I actively integrate into my designs and methods at all levels. Good grasp of encryption methods and standards, service isolation, forensics, and a strong advocate of many security architectures with a particular focus on “security by obfuscation”, Defense-in-Depth, and what is now called microsegmentation. I use my knowledge of hardware and software protocols and standards to incorporate in-depth security at the most fundamental levels of my designs, and I tend to select technologies that have functional, viable, maintainable security capabilities and/or integrations.

●I am an expert in modern server technology, with over 25 years of experience with Server class hardware from Dell, HP, IBM, and including a great deal of experience with Sun Galaxy 6000 series blade systems, and with Dell M1000, Dell VXRail, Cisco UCS, HP c-series, and Cisco UCS blade and rack server solutions. I have experience with essentially all technologies relevant to server environments, including internal and external RAID storage subsystems, SSD/Flash/NVMe, tape systems (including libraries and autoloaders), using FC and iSCSI HBA's for Boot-From-SAN scenarios, Infiniband, and the different SAS/SATA/FC/SCSI technologies. Some exposure to IBM UNIX servers, specifically RS/6000 series, and concepts such as LPARS.

●I have over 25 years of experience with Symantec/Veritas Backup Exec and similar tools for local server backup, and 20+ years of experience with advanced disaster recovery technologies. Some of the disaster recovery tools I have used include Asigra Televaulting, Commvault Galaxy, Acronis Enterprise Backup, Cofio AIMstor, Zerto, zManda, Veeam, and FilesX Express Restore. I am very experienced with Veeam Backup&Replication for VMWare, and configuring and using VMWare Site Recovery Manager for datacenter recovery with a variety of integrations (RecoverPoint, EMC VMAX integrations around SRDF). Much of my experience is in the MSP space, providing integrations and services for remote backup and DR, and/or consulting on various organizations internal backup/DR architectures.

●Some limited skill with Bash, Perl, Python, tcl/Expect, VBScript, Windows batch, and PowerShell/PowerCLI scripts. I must emphasize that it’s limited, as I’ve never been a programmer and have no formal training, aside from some Assembler from Electronics in college. Some experience with Perforce, Github, Gitlab, Attlassian Jira/Confluence/Bitbucket, Jenkins, Serena, Teamcity. Interested in learning more Python, Powershell in particular for automation and tooling. I am a big proponent of CI/CD/CD pipelines and modern DevOps methodologies.

●Some experience with Docker and modern container infrastructure; deeply interested in microservices architectures and “Fog Computing”, and serverless concepts. Have experience with several of the projects surrounding Docker and Kubernetes in particular, including Weave, Calico/Flannel/Tigera, as well as VMWare’s experimental projects along the way (VIC, Photon Platform). Familiar with Mesosphere DC/OS, and Kubernetes, and have worked in large scale active environments occasionally over last few years. Keeping close eye on the newer orchestration, discovery, and automation frameworks/libraries such as Consul, Contiv, Terraform, Ansible, etc, and especially watching the service mesh space very carefully, notably Linkerd, Conduit, and Ist.io projects, and have friends/associates who are very actively using these new technologies in production environments. Very interested in this area. Worked alongside several implementations of MongoDB, Couchbase, Kafka, Spark, Cassandra, Hadoop, and other modern Big Data batch/stream processing infrastructures. Very interested in hybrid serverless integration, notably around the nuclio project from Iguaz.io, and some of the other players such as kubeless, fission, etc. Have assisted with design and optimization around these products on many occasions, and have a solid grasp of how they operate in spite of bleeding edge nature and lack of maturity. Aware of some other players, such as Druid, ScyllaDB, Snappydata, and various other alternate Apache projects as well. These technologies are my primary focus in the years to come.

●Interested in modern DevOps technologies, and have worked in environments with Puppet, Chef/Opscode, Ansible, and Terraform, as well as the use of Jira, Jenkins, and Artifactory based CI/CD automation frameworks. Interested in various NetOps/Sysops hybrid approaches as well, and a great deal of interest in DevSecOps tooling.

●Some experience with production workloads in AWS, GCP, Azure, and Softlayer, and the hybrid toolsets built around ManageIQ/Red Hat Cloudforms, and Hotlink Express. Experience with routing and VPN integration with AWS VPC’s, and some of the security and network design considerations around them.

●Experience working with International teams, including developing and mentoring advanced Tier-3 and higher level production operations support/design staff, from scratch.

Professional Experience:

Verizon Business, Public Sector, Ashburn, VA August 2024-Present

Principal Architect-Solutions Architect. Staffed into FENS program

Developing standards and methods and runbooks for hardening and validation for the Infoblox, VMware, UCS, and Storage infrastructure layers and the base OS layers for bare-metal and virtual RHEL OS instances

●Design and planning around structure cabling, rack layouts, power and cooling, requirements for high availability.

●Environment included layered defense in depth approach to all traffic crossing service level boundaries between critical, essential, administrative, DMZ type workloads. Discrete physical network buildouts from OoB management and front-end management.

●Worked as an architect and directed hands-on implementation staff (initially a 3rd party contract organization, then internal contractors) to build and security harden to architecture specifications, driven by FAA/DoT requirements documentation.

Verizon Enterprise Solutions, Ashburn, VA June 2018-August 2024

Principal Engineer, ISD Architecture and Engineering. Staffed into Jetblue Airways

Working on a contract through Tekmark Global Solutions, then converted to staff role. Primarily responsible for Jetblue Airways NSX infrastructure for their modern DCR plant/environment. It is a complex environment with a mix of bare metal and multiple virtual systems (traditional VMWare vSphere, vSphere+NSX, and Nutanix, plus some Azure public cloud), multiple managed services vendors, external highly specialized airline-centric SaaS applications, etc.

●Primary engineer involved in design, engineering, integration of NSX architecture for new applications, including DFW or Edge Gateway firewall objects and rules. Load Balancer configurations, Infoblox IPAM and DNS. Plan all major change activity.

●Ongoing optimizations of a very suboptimal NSX implementation with some unique datacenter architectural considerations, including highly custom DR strategy, parallel non-integrated Cisco BGP-EVPN fabric (no metadata exchange; so asymmetric routing during certain HA or migration events were a challenge to design around). Evolved the design into a robust and reliable platform that is running mission critical workloads for many years in a successful lifecycle design.

●Engineered a production migration with a unique set of challenges from NSX-V to NSX-T, pushing the T product features to their limits. Could not use built-in or vendor provided automations due to many of the customizations and design patterns in use in the environment, so had to architect a manual migration plan with extremely limited outage windows, including recreating and translating the distributed firewall rulechains between incompatible firewall object formats (conflicts in the nature of dynamic lookups and objects between the technologies). Cutovers were extremely successful, with only very minor issues that were remedied rapidly.

●Re-integrating and maintaining, and operationalizing VMWare vRealize products vRLI, vROPS, and vRNI for a large distributed infrastructure.

●PCI compliance rationalizations for VMWare infrastructure at management layer, and new infrastructure for credit-card processing related applications

●Assist with initially building and training and operationalizing India-based tier-3 engineering and support team; Acted as mentor and trainer for advanced server and VMware skillsets in production operations environments, and led outage remediation efforts and skills development for the international team. It was the first and most successful production-level team of it’s kind, and I assisted with initial hiring and operationalizing the staff and building their skillset and the customer trust in their value. It is now the standard for new roles and priority for roles that become vacated from turnover.

●DR updates and rationalization for multiple applications running in VM and bare-metal server plants, using mix of VMWare SRM, and EMC tools such as Rapid Recovery and SRDF Metro on VPLEX and VMAX3 arrays. We have been transitioning following a typical forklift upgrade for EMC tooling and had to re-implement the entire DR toolchain as a result.

●Primary point of contact for outtage troubleshooting activity for major applications within the flight operations, ecommerce/eticketing environments. Some support for legacy environments as well.

●Planning and execution of application migrations to more modern VXRail datacenter footprint, and assisted in some migration planning for hybrid and dedicated public cloud and environments.
