Work Experience
Mental Health Counselor
Strivewell Behavioral Health - Paterson, NJ
August 2023-June 2024
Just as in Real House, I was hired as an intensive outpatient counselor. However, although some of this population of clients did struggle with substance use disorders, the majority of them were diagnosed with moderate to severe mental health diagnoses, such as various tupes of schizophrenia, severe bipolar disorder, borderline peronsality disorder, develomental disabilities, paranoia, hallicinations, severe commmunication issues with their peers, etc. There were approximately eitht groups per day, and although there were two othere counselors employed to be working with me, I was the only one with lesson planning experience, so it fell on me to plan all eight groups for the day. This quickly made me appointed my management as the head counselor. We would teach them things such as life skills, medication managment, communication methods, relaxation techniques; just to name a few. We also each had our own individual clients whom we would meet with one-on-one at least once per week to update their treatment plans and progress, counsel them and to ensure that they were doing well.
***Unfotunately I had to leave this great job in June of 2024 because I needed severe ankle and back surgery from horrific car accident I was in. I was put on temporary disabiity for a year. I was hoping to return to this job but, particilarly because of my back, I was out of commission for so long and being that they are such as small agency they just couldn't afford to hold my position for me, which I did understand. However, I did put the time I was home to good use! I took some online behavioral health courses and did a great deal of reading on healthcare.
Intensive Outpatient Counselor
Real House - Montclair, NJ
March 2023- August 2023
I worked as an IOP counselor and group facilitator for women who were dual-diagnosed with both substance use and mental heath disorders. I ran six groups per day, and I was responsible for noting the attendance and progress of each client for every group. I was also assigned individual clients, whom I met with for one-on-one sessions to counsel them and discuss more personal matters, such as any trauma, domestic abuse, sexual assault and any other issues they needed to work through.
***Real House has locations all across New Jersey, yet apparently after beig there for just a few months, their funding had gotten cut after the COVID pandemic, so they had no choice but to close some of their locations, and being that we were one of their smallest facilities, unfotunately we were one of the locations that had to get shut down.
Peer Recovery Specialist
Care Plus – Paterson, NJ
September 2022 to March 2023
I was hired as a recovery specialist yet also worked as a case manager for the Passaic County STAR program, which provides all necessary community and recovery resources for our clients who have moved beyond the crisis stage of addiction and have entered into long-term recovery. The program lasts for one year. We also did a lot of commmunity outreach to promote our program.
***We were so incredibly short-handed that some days I was taking work home with me and putting in a good 15 hours, with no overtime since I was salareied. I left when I was offerd the job at Real House, which offered me an actual counseling position for a much higher salary
Crisis Counselor
Vibrant Emotional Health - New York, NY
April 2022 to September 2022 (Remote)
I worked remotely as a Crisis Counselor (after contracting a bad case of COVID) while taking multiple courses that qualified me to handle various mental health emergencies and what to do when clients are in need of immediate support. I was trained to handle cases of trauma and psychiatric emergencies.
***This was a contract position
Outreach Coordinator and Recovery Coach
Prevention is Key - Rockaway, NJ
November 2021 to April 2022
I worked closely with the police depaartment for clients who were arrested and helped them avoid jail time by entering treatment and/or some type of recovery program. I was a recovery support coach to them as well as other peers in early recovery or those still in active addiction. I helped navigate them into treatment and acted as a support system for them. I also ran recovery groups and did a great deal of community outreach; conducting presentations in schools, clinics, hospitals and even to government officials on the dangers of opiate abuse, prevention and treatment.
***I left this position because the commute got to be too much, and, although I was great at my job, I felt as if I was being treated poorly by some of my co-workers, including those in HR. I also ended up getting a very bad case of COVID, so I took a contract remote position instead of returning.
Recovery Support Specialist
Children's Aid and Family Services - Fair Lawn, NJ November 2019 to November 2021
I worked in the Opiod Overdose Recovery Program (OORP) in which I visited patients in the hospitals who either overdosed or were admitted for other substance abuse issues. The goal was to get them into a treatment program if needed and to work with them on establishing a recovery support plan to maintain a pathway to sobriety. We would speak with our clientele regularly on the phone and also try to meet them in the community as often as possible. We also hosted outreach programs and events for both our clients and families, such as Fall Festivals, Holiday Parties, Walk-a-Thons, and many other fun sober activities to engage the community.
