Provide quality care for male and female patients over 12 years of age who are admitted to the unit pre and post- cardiac surgery. Patients are usually transferred from Adult Cardiac Surgical Intensive Unit to Ward on day 1 – 2 post-op.
Acquire vital signs and other hemodynamic parameters for all admitted patients.
Prepare patients for cardiac surgeries or other invasive or non-invasive procedures as per hospital protocol.
Ensure holistic care for the post-operative patient. This includes and not limited to:
Blood extraction for tests required in the care of the patient
Care of the wound is done as per institution’s policy and Doctor’s orders.
Facilitate the quick recovery of the post-surgical patient by encouraging ambulation, applying interventions for lung expansion, and, advocating the patient to perform his/her activities of daily living independently.
Apply critical thinking in the care of the post cardiac surgery patient in the ward and most especially in the High Dependency Unit (HDU) including but not limited to:
Interpret Arterial Blood Gases (or Venous Blood Gases) to quickly refer the need of intervention from the team.
Complete the following competencies to be capable in taking care of patients in HDU:
Temporary Pacemaker handling, Arterial Line and Central Line monitoring, site care and removal, and Chest Drain monitoring, care and removal
Process the patient’s discharge from the hospital by:
Educating the patient on wound care, hygiene, proper diet and exercise at home
Assist the doctor in removing pacing wires and the care for the patient afterwards.
Ensuring continuity of care by reminding scheduled outpatient appointments.
