Resume:

Dear Potential Employer,

I am applying for a labourer position. I believe that I have the desired skills and attitude that would contribute to your company.

I am mature, hard-working and reliable. I have worked several years in a construction environment now and I have known numerous people working in a similar capacity. I am not like the typical labourer in many ways.

Although I am more mature, I can supply references that I work harder and get more accomplished than any labourer they have ever seen. One of the reasons is that I don’t do things the way most others do. I find ways to get things done faster and easier. For example, one of the things I have noticed is the way every labourer uses garbage bags. They cost $40 a box and they use them like candy. On one site where I first started, one guy was using over a box a week. The last work site, I might have used 10 garbage bags in total in over a year and that 11 story site had no garbage chute. I would use the thicker bags left over from the concrete guys and boxes. I would not try and fill garbage bags with the heavy debris from rocks when buckets won’t rip and can be carried. I would use the boxes from the ventilation guys for the debris from the framers and wires etc. because they can hold as much weight as a bag AND they protect your legs from the sharp edges of the metal. I would use the boxes for the tubs all the time. You can fill them but also I would take half of one and by laying it out you can just throw the debris, especially the drywall, on the box and then drag it down the stairs, You don’t have to open a bag and put things in, you just pile it on and then drag it. There is the equivalent of four or more garbage bags that are carried in one trip. This is faster, easier and saves the wasted mony on $40 garbage bags.

Trades people would come on to the site for an 11 story apartment building and call it the “cleanest site in the city”. I understand the work environment and am trusted to work independently. Unless the owner or foreman had something specific to take care of on occasion, the words were “do your thing.”

I decided to write out in detail some of the things I have done so that you get a better idea of how I can contribute to the success of the company. I hope that the position is still available and that you would offer an interview. I am available any time.

Sincerely,

Tim McLay
