Being a consultant drilling fluid engineer is like being a jack of all trades. I manage crews (from 1-30 people), clean & maintain work areas. Manage stock points. Handle shipping & receiving & coordinate logistics. I help maintain various large pieces of equipment (mostly for solids control). Essentially, my job is to make myself indispensable as possible to any operations. In the USA have worked all across the Gulf of Mexico including Deepwater, worked the Alabama, Mississippi, throughout Louisiana & Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio, Utah, North Dakota & Alaska’s North Slope. In NE Utah, I developed for Newfield Exploration, a way to chemically treat out the adverse effects of paraffin in oil based mud, without need for extra dilution. This not only saved several hundred thousands of dollars in dilution costs, it also enabled to drill the wells in record times. I have worked with numerous exploration companies (including overseas) & several deep-water projects. At times I was contracted direct to the exploration company. I worked 2 different jobs for a mud company that my duties included being a relief project engineer when I was not on the drilling rig.
Several projects duties had me as also the exploration company representative on location (i.e. drill rep). This included all L.L.O.G. projects where I served as night drill rep (& handling all shipping & receiving). My work includes working in Brunei (6 months), Malaysia & Venezuela (6 months). In Brunei I was also in charge of all logistics for every warehouse of Schlumberger’s, to provide the most efficient service possible at the best price savings. I have worked in a variety of work environments from temperatures ranging from -29* F to 122* F. I have worked for drilling fluid companies as well as directly for O&G companies including Chevron, EOG, Stone, Petroquest, Northcoast, LLOG & Newfield.
I have trained mud company drilling fluid technologist (mud engineers) for 5 different companies during this time. I am a member of the A.P.I. & on 3 different committee work groups: TG8 WG5 Starch Specifications, TG5 WG2 Shaker Screen Certification / Monogram, I am also on the API RP 13L revision Committee (for training & practices of drilling fluid technologist). I been recently added to oilfieldwiki.com as an editor & am an active & outspoken member of the drilling & completion fluid community, especially on various LinkedIn groups, managing over 20,000 industry members) as well as an editor at www.oges.com (with over 74,000 industry members). With my background also including years as in production as a lease operator, I am well equipped to understand the needs of the drilling, completion or production for any O & G operator.
