RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS RIO GRANDE VALLEY (UTRGV)

Research Assistant Aug 2023 – Current Project: Introducing novel seismic isolators based on frictional metamaterial for vibration control of infrastructures

• Conducted a literature review on different types of metamaterials, proposing and verifying a new topology of metamaterials using theoretical equations, FEM modeling, and prototype modeling for laboratory experiments.

• Developed a novel type of frictional metamaterial with smooth behavior for vibration control of civil structures and performed finite element modeling, design, and proof-of-concept prototype fabrication (R&D).

• Developed characterization testing of the frictional metamaterial in the laboratory, which included installation of linear servo- electric and hydraulic actuators, load cells, LVDTs, data acquisition systems, and signal processing and filtering.

• Performed modeling, design, and analysis of a passive control system consisting of the frictional metamaterial base isolator and lead rubber bearings for seismic protection of standard curved bridges and multi-story base-isolated buildings and bridges under extreme seismic scenarios defined by AASHTO and ASCE 7-10 in California.

• Introduced a novel multi-resonator seismic isolator for vibration control in civil structures:

• Performed analytical and numerical modeling, characterization study, and finite element analysis of the rigid-body motion of MDOF systems subjected to earthquake-induced pounding.

• Evaluated the validity and reasonableness of AASHTO seismic design guidelines for multi-story buildings and bridges under excessive torsion caused by earthquake-induced pounding and provided improved recommendations.

• Developed a novel Seismic Base Isolation (SBI) system based on fluid-filled metamaterial cells:

• Worked on a project funded by UTRGV and DDETFP, where the metamaterial lattice serves as an isolation layer, blocking seismic waves by creating a frequency bandgap. Additionally, the fluids within the lattice enhance energy dissipation, effectively reducing seismic vibrations and mitigating potential damage to the structure by absorbing seismic shear waves. INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE OF EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING AND SEISMOLOGY (IIEES) Research Assistant Aug 2017 - Sep 2023 Project: Seismic risk assessment and development of seismic fragility curves for water storage tanks and Machine learning techniques for design

• Performed analytical and finite element analysis of fluid on ground tanks subjected to earthquake-induced pounding (impact forces at the base) using ANSYS, OpenSEESPy, SAP2000, MATLAB, and SIMULINK in accordance with standards.

• Developed and analyzed fragility curves for cylindrical concrete water tanks under seismic loads, incorporating non-linear dynamic analyses to assess seismic vulnerability, with a focus on the importance of cracking behavior in dynamic analyses.

• Investigated hydrodynamic pressure distribution for fixed-roof rectangular drinking water storage tanks with insufficient freeboard, focusing on earthquake-induced pounding and the seismic vulnerability of these tanks using advanced modeling techniques.

• Developed fragility curves for water storage tank structures and used seismic hazard curves to assess the seismic risk of these tanks in earthquake-prone regions, enabling more accurate risk assessment by incorporating critical variables such as tank height and crack width.

• Investigated innovative retrofitting techniques for water storage tanks, including the installation of baffles, plates, and adjustments to the freeboard of the tanks to mitigate seismic forces. This research involved prototype modeling in the laboratory and machine learning techniques to predict seismic forces based on FEM models and earthquake simulation tests.

• Conducted deterministic and probabilistic seismic hazard analysis and nonlinear Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA) to assess the seismic vulnerability and retrofit strategies for fluid storage tanks.

• Contributed to the development of updated design standards for retrofitting and rehabilitation of existing water tank structures, including recommendations to improve the resistance of old tanks to earthquakes by adding middle walls or freeboard to reduce seismic forces.

Research Assistant Aug 2016 - Sep 2020 Project: Propose a pervious concrete mixing plan for existing formulations to prevent runoff on pathways

• Investigated the use of pervious concrete, which consists of coarse aggregates bonded with a cement matrix, and aimed to enhance its properties by incorporating superplasticizers, lubricating agents, and antifreeze to improve durability against freezing and thawing cycles while maintaining acceptable permeability.

• Conducted experimental tests on several pervious concrete samples, varying granular aggregate types and water-to-cement

(W/C) ratios to optimize the concrete’s performance and resistance to deterioration during environmental stress cycles.

• Developed new, affordable pervious concrete mix designs as alternatives to traditional concrete or asphalt pavements, with the goal of preventing runoff and improving the safety of roads and pathways by mitigating surface water accumulation during rainfall.

• Proposed several mixture plans and developed processes for incorporating pervious concrete into pathways and concrete roads, aiming to enhance infrastructure resilience and address urban environmental challenges like stormwater runoff.

• Focused on preventing runoff on pathways by improving pervious concrete’s ability to handle rainfall-induced surface water, contributing to solutions for urban flooding and road closures due to water accumulation in several U.S. states. CURRICULUM VITAE Jan 25 Shayan Khosravi
