Sep 2022 – Oct 2023: Sybase Database Administrator/MS SQL Server DBA, SPINNAKER (Dobler Support)
Working remotely while living in California I was tasked with P1 support for Sybase clients in various businesses, including Brussels Airport, sheet metal and chemical factories, Marten Trucking, PARUS communications, and numerous financial organizations. The issues I was assigned were serious issues ranging from corrupted Sybase databases, serious replication failures, performance and tuning of sql queries, and some Sybase 12/15 to 16 upgrades. In addition to this I was tasked with a long standing SPINNAKER support project that had fallen into some serious time trouble. That being comprehensive, integrated, tightly coupled monitoring solution with LogicMonitor. That project now completed, my work at SPINNAKER was completed.
Sep 2017 – Sep 2022: Sybase Database Administrator/MS SQL Server DBA, FiServ
Working remotely while living in Oregon I was engaged in numerous Sybase 15.x and Edge (Sybase 16) dba work such as migrations/upgrades, performance and tuning using sp_sysmon, and MDA tables, dbcc repairs, replication installs, materializations, tuning, and problem analysis in RedHat Linux and AIX environments. Versions of Sybase currently in use are 12.5, 15.03, 15.5,15.7,16 (Enterprise and Edge), Replication 16. I performed numerous upgrades of FiServ’s credit union clients from Sybase versions 15.03 and 15.7 to Sybase ASE version 16 Edge. I also assumed control of FiServ’s Sybase replication clients and automated much of the Sybase replication build, migration, and maintenance functions via automated shellscript coding.
Also support a number of inhouse FiServ SqlServer databases. We are currently at SQL Server 2016, using SSMS version 2019
While with FiServ I worked with our DBA team to migrate 100+ Sqlserver 2012 and S1lServer 2016 Servers to SqlServer 2019. The target SqlServer 2019 instances were in both on-premises Windows Servers as well as Azure SqlServer cloud platforms The target Azure SqlServer instances served as our disaster recovery/backup systems.. We used SqlServer SSIS as our primary ETL tool
May 2017 – Sep 2017: DB2 Z/OS conversion programmer and DBA, State of Oregon Department of Administration Services
Working on a short-term, specialized project migrating/converting their current HR DB2/CICS/Cobol system to cloud-based Workday object-oriented system. Primary programmer for the conversion team. Primary responsibility is to convert their entire current legacy data (DB2/Z/OS based) into files to be uploaded and converted to cloud-based Workday environment. The position also requires use of my DB2 DBA skills as I am building a new DB2 subsystem for the conversion effort. This was a short-term position.
August 2016 – March/2017: Oracle, MS Sqlserver and Informix Senior Database Administrator, City of Portland, BTS (Bureau of Technology Services)
Have quickly learned MS Sqlserver tools and procedures necessary for support of numerous City of Portland facilities, including SSMS (SQL Server Management Studio), MS SQL Reporting Services, SQL Server Configuration Manager, etc. Installed Sqlserver 2016 on several Windows Servers, created new databases, engaged in numerous restores of databases, and migrated numerous SQL Server databases from versions 2008 through 2016. Created numerous stored procedures needed by the city, maintenance plans, and Sqlserver auditing needed for City of Portland services.
Returned to Oracle DBA work and engaged in an aggressive self-learning schedule to refresh and upgrade my Oracle database expertise. Engaged in several oracle upgrades to version 12c, installed several Oracle PSU patches, restored and recovered several databases using RMAN, Commvault, and GRID 12c. Engaged in all aspects of 12c and 11g Oracle DBA support after a 10-year absence from supporting Oracle.
Continued to support applications built on Informix version 12. This includes essential City services such as their 911 emergency system, and various Portland Police critical applications. Continued to support Informix HDR and ER replication systems. Upgraded the City of Portland’s OpenAdmin Tool to the latest version available (3.15.1)

Migrated over 130 Informix Instances from de-supported Informix versions to Informix 11.7 Migrated over 50 Sybase Instances from de-supported Sybase versions to Sybase 15.7

Senior Sybase and Informix database administrator supporting over 300 production Sybase and Informix IDS and Standard Engine instances as well as numerous development instances. Position consists of all dba functions from new installs of Sybase and Informix, migrating Sybase and Informix to new versions of Sybase and Informix or to/from Oracle, maintenance and tuning, fault analysis, developing shell scripts and stored procedures, design of new instances, 24/7 production support. Updated IMS Exit Assembler programs that resulted in elimination of internal IMS DC Online bottlenecks
Position consisted of two critical and discreet functions – the maintenance of a large system of Assembler, PLI, Cobol, Rexx, Clist, and Dialog Manager programs along with database administration work with Oracle, DB2, IMS, and Informix databases. The programs I maintained were used by most of the applications in the AT&T business billing system that performed critical functions such as IMS exit functionality, MQSeries and OTMA message routing.
10/87 - 2/99: Programmer/Team Lead, AT&T
Designed, coded, and implemented a complete re-architecture of a Cobol/DB2/IMS online error system that reduced throughput of a critical monthly billing cycle by 48 hours
Performed a great deal of design and coding for an IMS DB/DC and DB2 system that processes heavy volumes of errored 800 and 900 business calls. Acting as the development project leader I served as the main focal point regarding all system design changes. Some of the programming technologies I routinely used included MicroFocus COBOL, XDB, Stingray, IMS DB/DC utilities, PC/Mainframe File-Aid, DB2 utilities, XPEDITER, and many other PC and Mainframe tools.
