Initial position as a DBA consultant began with supporting SQL Server, Oracle, and MySQL database systems for the TNNAS ministry in Nashville, TN. Initiatives involved the following:
• Made performance improvements with proper tuning methods.
• Stabilized and improved database backups.
• Remediated unsupported and abandoned environments.
• Upgraded database software to latest versions.
• Implemented security hardening measures.
Promoted to a position of DBA Team Lead, with continued support of database systems for the TNNAS ministry, as well as utilizing four additional DBA resources to begin support for many other ministry sites across Ascension’s landscape. Additional initiatives involved the following:
• Coordinated DBA resource assignments for improved team efficiency and effectiveness.
• Expanded the DBA team in-scope support to 32 ministry sites from only three.
• Worked with management to expand the DBA team to 12 positions.
• Implemented primary and secondary ministry site assignments for improved customer reliability and communication with dedicated DBA resource availability.
• Created a formalized primary and secondary On-Call schedule for 24/7 support.
• Deployed and stabilized Veritas Netbackup to manage all SQL Server and Oracle database backups, with increased involvement in DR exercises for testing restore/recovery procedures.
• Deployed and stabilized conversion of 1700+ on-prem database platforms to Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware virtualization clusters as VM servers. Promoted to a position of DBA Team Manager, with carry-over of DBA Team Lead agendas and goals. Additional initiatives involved the following:
• Expanded the DBA team in-scope support into the cloud-based environments of Microsoft Azure, MongoDB, and Google GCP/Big Query, with emphasis on creating a separately functioning Cloud DBA team.
• Worked with management to expand the DBA team to 18 positions.
• Adjusted the primary and secondary ministry site assignments to accommodate database platform growth in SQL Server to 3000+, and with Oracle, MySQL, and PostgreSQL accounting for an additional 200 platforms.
• Coordinated efforts for a SQL Server on Linux POC and subsequent implementation.
• Coordinated conversion of all database backups from Veritas Netbackup to utilizing Dell/EMC Networker and PPDM solutions to achieve Five 9s reliability.
• Collaborated with the Enterprise Server team to implement an improved Windows server patch maintenance workflow and schedule, inclusive of SQL Server patching.
• Collaborated with the Enterprise Server team for a project to convert VMs from Hyper-V to VMware VSAN virtualization cluster technology.
• Kickstarted and expanded priority for a company-wide project to remediate 2008 and older versions of Windows Server O/S and SQL Server database platforms. Currently working to kickstart a new, perpetual project to remediate 2012 and 2014 versioned SQL Server platforms, as well as 11g and 12c versioned Oracle platforms.

Participated in interviewing multiple company bids for an IT outsourcing initiative with executive management for 3 days at corporate headquarters in St Louis, Missouri. Final decision to offer HCL the opportunity required a reduction of DBA team associates to 7, with plans to expand with an additional 12 HCL DBA resources. Initiatives involved the following:
• Completed 8 weeks of Knowledge Transfer (KT) sessions to educate the HCL DBA team in the areas of on-prem database technologies supported, standards, processes, methodologies, customer service and communications, company culture, etc.
• Expanded HCL DBA support initiatives with increased collaboration on Cloud DBA team activities and goals.
• Provided the HCL DBA resources with opportunities to expand their knowledge with challenging project work, available training, and involvement in top priority company missions.
Sr Database Architect at Dollar General Corp, Nashville TN February 2008 — May 2010
• Provided support for newly developed database environments utilizing Oracle 10g EE, 10g EE RAC technology, and new 11g EE. Oracle components utilized included Clusterware, ASM, Partitioning, and Grid Control for management. Server hardware configuration consisted of HP Superdome, IBM RISC, and HP DL580 server technologies utilizing HP-UX, AIX, and RHEL 5 operating systems, respectively.
• Provided support for Microsoft SQL Server versions 2005 and 2008 for various ancillary systems. Tasks included managing backups using Symantec BackupExec, performance tuning using the Microsoft performance dashboard tool within the management studio app, and SQL tuning as needed.
• Developed and managed architectures to support proper disk storage configurations, proper utilization of hardware resources, and manageable procedures for database maintenance and tuning.

• Provided support for newly developed database environments utilizing Oracle 10g RAC technology. Oracle components utilized include Clusterware, ASM, Partitioning, and Grid Control for management. Server configuration consisted of Dell 9850 quad CPU Intel Xeon technology hosting the Novell SUSE (SLES 9.1 SP3) linux operating system.
• Developed architectures to support proper disk storage configurations, proper utilization of hardware resources, and manageable procedures for database maintenance and tuning.
