Mary Powell grew up in Kingsville, TX, as the daughter of college education professor Lewis Ross Fisher and elementary teacher Ruth Elizabeth Fisher and was sister to two younger brothers. In 1962, Mary married the love of her life, Warner Duane Powell. They have raised three girls together. Her husband, Duane, passed away in 1995.

1963 - BS in Elementary Education, English, and Library Science from the University of Texas (Austin)

1971 - MS degree in Education Supervision from Texas A & M (Kingsville).

1999 – Master of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary.

After 30 years teaching K-12 in Del Valle, Carrizo Springs, and Buda, TX, Mary retired in 1993. Of those 30 years, 17 years were spent running the Carrizo Springs High School Library, including entering the data and computerizing the circulation of the book collection in the 70s. Another three years were spent running the Green Elementary School Library in the Hays ISD. She then spent 2 years as time Library Director with a focus on entering the catalog data and computerizing the circulation of all books and media at the Community Library in Wimberley, TX.

Skills still in use today for Mary are PC computer use, including Microsoft Office, Windows 10, and PowerPoint with use of multimedia equipment for projecting slides she creates and DVDs used while teaching or speaking.

Volunteering:

Mary is presently volunteering as a small group leader and substitute preacher at the Wesleyan for Independent Living in Georgetown, TX, where she lives. She tutors by editing manuscripts for award-winning movie scripts and tutoring ESL online for an adult who lives in France, teaching English and editing and directing high school senior college application essays, and teaching reading for a seventh grader who lives in Round Rock.

Past Employment:

Mary is now senior clergy in the Global Methodist Church in the Mid-Tex Annual Conference, serving as volunteer spiritual director for pastors and teaching Bible studies at the Wesleyan for Independent Living.

From 2016 to 2019 Mary served as chaplain at the Wesleyan for Assisted Living.

From 2011 to 2023 she was Adjunct Spiritual Director at St. Philip’s UMC in Round Rock where from 2006 to 2009 she had served full time as Discipleship Minister, training small group leaders and Stephen Ministers, preaching, and teaching.

From 2002-2005 Mary Powell pastored First United Methodist Church, Cotulla, TX. On December 28, 2003, in a merger, the church received members from a sister church of the Rio Grande Conference, El Buen Pastor Iglesia Unida Metodista. Mary received the Bishop’s Ecumenical Award at the 2004 Annual Conference. She retired but spent a year of volunteer ministry with Rev. Bob Hahn at First United Methodist Church in Lockhart, TX.

As associate pastor at First United Methodist Church, Marble Falls, TX from 1999-2002, Mary was responsible for leading the Sunday 8 a.m. communion and Wednesday evening communion services. She provided leadership for the team formation for multimedia contemporary services held on each first Saturday in a coffeehouse venue. Mary also recruited and trained small group leaders, many of whom are still leading groups today. KEY groups that Mary led were a grief support group, The Wesley Experiment, Disciple Bible, and a singles ministry, plus a Bible study group at Gateway Nursing Home.
