Beginning a career in information technology at the “bottom of the stack” in 1988, Dan has moved through the ranks from technical support, to systems administration, to enterprise architecture and acting as Chief Technology Officer for 5 different firms. Working as a contractor and consultant, he has been involved in more than 40 organizations, designing and delivering the future of their electronic services with sound business judgment and management skills. In the latter half of his career, Dan focused on entrepreneurship and early stage innovation, undertaking dozens of mandates and startup in their earlies stages.
• In the role of Senior Technical Architect for Shared Services Canada, Dan designed solutions and strategies for high-level data center design, implementation and management. He specified, reviewed and recommended new service offerings to integrate for federal and provincial agencies, including supercomputing and cluster computing services, secure data centers, application monitoring and workflow automation.
• As President of FLITE Material Sciences, Dan negotiated a license for disruptive technology from the University of Rochester that uses lasers to transform the surface of materials. As a technology transfer agency, he was responsible for researching market opportunities and matching them with bleeding-edge research products, to bring out of the lab and into commercial utility. His role in innovation service was applied across smart manufacturing, design engineering, chemical coatings and surface treatments for a variety of industries. The company ran proof-of-concept experiments in aerospace, defense, oil and gas, semiconductor and durable goods sectors.
• For TenX2 Consulting, operating on a virtual basis in Hong Kong, Singapore, London and the Netherlands, act as the “resource on the ground” for deal flow origination in the mid market addressing smart city and environmental technologies. Act as strategy consultant for engagements where midmarket clients wish to grow their business tenfold with international business development, mergers and acquisitions, and innovation programs.
• For iSun Energy, Dan held the role as Chief Technology Officer. He took a leading role in product development along with the founder; augmented the product with novel IP scouting and university research sources; won federal and provincial grant support for innovation and export, and developed a cross-functional team from within 8 different partner firms to deliver the prototype products in the solar energy industry. • For Inolife Technologies, act as a strategic advisor in the recovery of this needle-free injection business for reintroduction to the North American marketplace. Review regulatory documentation, craft business strategy and help the team connect to select pharmaceutical and medical device investment groups and distributors. (Acquired by Nugen Medical)
• For CSI Diagnostics, an AI-driven B2B SaaS, Dan took over business development activities to redirect them to a new industry. Presented at conferences, sponsored events and industry activities in five new sales areas; lead sales effort in the venture capital, private equity and family office sectors. Establish policies and pricing for distributors and begin outreach campaign to portfolio management companies and M&A brokerages.
• For the Montreal Jewish General Hospital, acted as the first Director of Research Commercialization; work with the CFO, an oversight board and the leaders at the Lady Davis Research Institute to establish a full-service technology transfer office. Curate the most likely scientific projects, create development plans, and begin business development activities for five projects. Perform market research and sales outreach to targeted pharmaceutical, hospital and research organizations in Canada, the USA, China, Japan and Israel.
• For Odotech, acted as Turnaround CTO, responsible for technical activities for this cleantech company in industrial odor detection. This included software product management, R&D, and quality control, as well as a strategic role in sales and corporate strategy. Our team completed the company’s first certifiable working product after 8 years of development, and worked side- by-side with sales to grow the distributor network, respond to RFP requests, and expand the offering to increase recurring revenues and shrink delivery costs. (Sold to Envirosuite, 2017)
• For Integrated Clinical Care, in a turnaround mandate for this distressed oncology EMR provider, establish priorities for development for the ARRA-driven marketplace. Create strategic alliances with leading standards providers in oncology, leveraging published guidelines by implementing them directly in the software. Implementing clinical trial opportunities directly into the EMR created new lines of revenue for customers and ICC to share.
• For 3CE, Inc. act as Chief Technology Officer, overseeing development and customer adoption projects for the Canadian government. This early-stage software services company provided a solution to the global logistics industry. We ran a pilot project with our first US and Canadian government clients, and established new sales relationships with freight forwarders, exporters, carriers and international government agencies. (Sold to Avalara, 2021)
• For Future Electronics Inc., a global distribution company in electronic components, undertake a distressed worldwide rollout project and complete objectives on time and within budget. Work hands on as a project manager with developers, asset managers, data center operators, department heads and directors for a global deployment of thin-client computing infrastructure.
• For Oceanwide, Inc. a growing SaaS provider in the insurance industry, implement and lead all technical activities including 4 software development teams, professional services, integration, support, infrastructure management and quality control. Grow the team from 22 to 45 direct reports and change the company culture from “garage/hacker” to “method-driven software enterprise.” During this period, the company signed on the world’s largest brokers and underwriters as clients, acquired a customs software firm, expanded to Europe, and grew to over 100 employees with $15M in revenue. (Sold to Insurity, 2015)
• As a managing director Thoughtbridge International, a boutique advisory group, perform technical due diligence services for angel investors in the local community, review and intervene in dozens of leading-edge startups. The team took CxO-for-Hire engagements to select startup projects (Timing Corporation), led the industry in analytics for web-based marketing, and we funded our own innovative startup in retail point-of-sales technology called Genieomics. (Closed shortly after 9/11)
• Act as lead architect for a variety of business and technical strategy engagements at IBM Global Services, including an airline merger (Air Canada/Canadian Airlines) – a 12 month integration project led by 12 senior architects with a $120M budget and a $1M/day late penalty clause. Lead initiatives for the retail, health care, rail (CN and Via) and banking industries (Desjardins) for projects between $1.5M and $10M. Act as consulting methodologist on dozens of projects internationally.
• As Managing Director and lead consultant of Clear Thinking Technology, based in Ottawa, Canada, and branching out into the San Francisco Bay Area, this boutique technical consulting firm went from startup to $1M in billable hours within 2 years, serving Silicon Valley as well as the San Francisco financial district (Oracle, Sun, Charles Schwab, Clorox, Providian). Our team went from 1 to 21 in 18 months, all fully deployed at client sites, consulting across the spectrum in IT strategy, project management, development, and deployment. CTT built Oracle University, Schwab’s Retail Education and Training Media Lab, Sun Microsystems’ first content management system, and oversaw data center redesign for Clorox Inc. and other regional firms.
• As Senior Technical Architect for The LGS Group In Montreal and Ottawa, Dan undertake a series of short technical engagements including business strategy, process improvement, post-merger systems integration for the Public Works and Government Services Canada, enterprise security for CSIS, library systems, and financial platform engineering. Client environments included Hydro Quebec (state-owned power generation and distribution), CDPQ (parapublic investment fund), Ultramar (oil & gas) and branches of the Canadian government. • Ekomini Inc. – work with the founders to build on a successful product that teaches children and teens to save money. Build a mobile app and game-enabled back-end to encourage savings, basic financial skills, and market to retail banks in North America and Europe for their clients.
• Discover Learning Interactive – for this spinout in financial educational services, design a completely new paradigm for learning delivery and student engagement, as a complement to conventional classroom and curriculum events.
• Bitcoin Generation – as lead architect for this emerging blockchain services group, identify, design and implement blockchain-based solutions for food and beverage security, retail loyalty programs, electronic consent forms, and other opportunities.
• Act as panel judge and mentor for business case and business plan competitions at Columbia, Berkeley, UCLA, NYU, Rice and other university entrepreneurship centers.
• Perform technical due diligence for a number of investment firms and angel groups on software and hardware acquisitions.
