o Raise chickens, tortoises, rescue wild birds, and freshwater fishes. Summary:
My name is James Miyasaka, known as “Jimmy”, I was born and raised in Kaimuki Hawaii. I am a community boy that grew up in the Kaimuki area. I first learned how to play basketball at Kaimuki Park where I fell in love with the game. Growing up I was home schooled by my parents which gave me the opportunity to raise animals. This is where I developed my love for animals as I use to hand feed baby birds, raise dogs, pet rats and mice, tropical freshwater fishes, rabbits, chickens, and tortoises. I then went to Kaimuki High School, where I played basketball there and became the class valedictorian. During my speech I made an acronym suited for my love for DOGS, also being part of Kaimuki Bulldogs. D-stands for Determination “Never, never, never give up…” by Winston Churchill, O-stands for Overcoming Obstacles “If you want to see the end of the rainbow be prepared to endure the storms…”, G-stands for my Faith in God “For I can do all things through God, who gives Me the strength that I need” Philippians 4:13, with those 3 things comes S for Success! I furthered my education at the California State Polytechnic University of Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) where I was a member of the NCAA Division 2 Men’s basketball team. We were the 2005 West Regional Champions, 2009 CCAA Conference Champions, 2009 West Regional Champions, and 2009 National Finalist. I was on National Scholar List. After getting my undergraduate Pre-Med Biology degree at Cal Poly Pomona I got accepted into Western University of Health Sciences College of Optometry as part of the inaugural class. I was elected the inaugural class president for our class. There I found 2 of my dogs WUCO and Nubblet. I also found Budo, Cookie, and Charlie. I named WUCO as our class mascot and they went with me everywhere. After graduating from optometry school, I had the opportunity to work at different offices. I was an associate, I was also the chief optometrist at the state prison, and I had my own company office. But it was time to come home to Hawaii to help with my family office. My dogs were all found off the streets and Charlie was an elder dog who was diagnosed with diabetes and lost his vision here in Hawaii. However I found the one dog eye surgeon that performed cataract surgery that helped him see again. Budo been through her own battles with seizures and was sadly put down in November 2018. I have a basketball named after her for her determination to never give up in life. Cookie Monster is my little baby who is a needy but lovey girl. Then there is WUCO and Nubblet who are my shadows. Being back been great so I can serve the community that provided me many opportunity to get to where I am today. My passion has always been basketball and by running Menehune Basketball League in Hawaii we are giving the community and opportunity to exercise and fellowship with others. WUCO Athletics gives me the opportunity to use my athletic background to provide top quality sports uniforms, apparel, and equipment to athletes. My optometry practice is my daytime job that gives me the rewarding opportunity to care for peoples’ vision and overall health. God has put me through many ups and downs but I’m very thankful and blessed he gave me the opportunity to come back to Hawaii and be part of something special. Now being back home I enjoy doing activities with my family, spending time with my dogs, while watching the kids grow up. I have my son James Miyasaka Jr ( “J.J”), step-daughter Reya, and significant other Amy. I also attend C4 Christ Centered Community Church.
