developed and wrote procedures for operating nuclear power plants for USN submarines.
In the training field, writing included foreign nationals (most military but some commercial) and domestic (commercial):
curriculum development
textbooks and training programs
prepared scripts for, and directed, training films.
For ARAMCO, I worked in Saudi Arabia writing procedures for operating the oilfields. I worked with Schlumberger and Otis Engineering, among others, to obtain information for writing the documents. Procedures included operating off-shore rigs.
Much writing was aircraft manuals/SOPs for both large and small commercial/military aircraft
flight, engines, interiors, airframes
IPB/IPCs (fixed wing/rotary acft)
airframe (structures)
maintenance
Service bulletin/Engineering Order incorporation
Commercial to FAR and CFR)
Military manuals included marine (surface and submarine) maintenance and repair procedures.
Because much of my writing has been for the US Government (DOD and DOE, I am familiar with most MIL STANDARDS and MIL SPECS on manual, procedure, specification, and proposal preparation, including the DOE Writers Guide.
Documents for the government were operational, mechanical, engineering, and electrical procedures for the B1B bomber, F4, F8, and F15 fighter craft, missiles (Sidewinder, Shrike and Sparrow repair procedures), marine (Trident II class nuclear submarines), for DOD and nuclear procedures (maintenance/process/operating) for DOE. The B1B docs were flight manuals and organizational and intermediate level procedures on the compression, fuel, and environmental control systems and airframes. The documents included repair and electrical/mechanical theory. F4 and F8 aircraft manuals included organizational, intermediate and depot level overhaul and repair procedures for nose and main landing gear, pilot ejection system, and electrical system.
Methods for developing text consist of:
"hands on" research
interviewing engineering/technical SME personnel
reading electrical schematics/mechanical drawings
researching technical literature, relevant trade/engineering journals/reports/articles
engineering bulletins
associated manuals
other publications and/or documents.
