Dear Hiring Manager or Team,
I am writing to express my interest in the General Engineer/Physical Scientist position. I believe you'll find that I have the exact qualifications you are looking for due to having worked at the U.S. Geological Survey for 9 years, where I started out as a physical science technician and worked my way up to becoming a physical scientist. I hold a bachelor’s degree in multidisciplinary environmental science and a master’s degree in earth science/geoscience. My graduate work consisted of 35 credit hours in geoscience; the math credits were met during my undergrad.
I have worked with other federal organizations such as the Bureau of Land Management and various USGS agencies. I have developed many complex maps including such aspects as land ownership, property boundaries, and topographic land types for managers and other professionals. Some of these maps were published for public use. I provided project chiefs with information about whether desired outcomes can be achieved using GIS and other programs. I have developed many new and specialized maps. As an example, I am currently creating a map of the hydrologic characterization of the subsurface underneath a family member's property to assist with well placement.
Although I received two promotions during my time at the USGS, I did not reach a higher GS level because I did not have a Master's degree at the time. However, I was told by a superior after my seventh year there that my work was at a much higher level, even above a GS9. The quality and type of work I've done is mentioned in my attached recommendation letters and demonstrated by my publications and preprints. I have considerable supervisory experience both at the USGS as well as at the factory positions I held to support my daughter while putting myself through graduate school. I have mentored new hires and assisted with quality control of the geophysical data collected prior to leaving data collection sites. I have also trained new hires in how to select proper field sites for data acquisition. I believe that my combined experience qualifies for more than a year as a GS-11. I am excited about this opportunity to offer my skills to the National Nuclear Security Admistration and hope that you will consider me.
Thank you.
