Zywave – Cloud Systems Engineer

JULY 2022 – DECEMBER 2022

As a Cloud/Systems Engineer on a 15-person team I was privileged to contribute and share in the wealth of many different knowledge and extensive skillsets that came from all members of the team. Through the course of Zywave purchasing 2 other companies in a 3-year time span. I shared duties with the supervisor of the IT team in performing M&A tasks, that centrally revolved around supporting and managing a 4-tier domain Active Directory logical architecture, that was acutely configured to replicate in hybrid setup to Azure AD. On a cyclic basis, I served both as the daytime and overnight on-call duty engineer as part of a shared rotating cyclic responsibility spread across the team. The domain hierarchal tiers under constant management with an all-efforts made and auditable SLA of 99.99% (in “Production”) uptime are listed below:

oDev

oQA/QC

oPre-Production

oProduction

Explanation: Through this Active Directory architecture design methodology, starting at Dev and ending in Production that’s a 4 tier, zero trust, multi-domain Active Directory environment where there was a phased approach to vetting all variables as they would graduate and be introduced from one environment to the next adding all variables and testing before reaching “Production” environment. This process ensures no negative/adverse effect on any pre-existing production resources. On a regular basis we would provide any needed or requested assistance from Development in getting any applications, and or their amendments, installations, configurations, or testing a setup that may need to be completed, vetted, and documented prior to rolling out and deploying them to production. Moreover, the same set of adherences governed the IT engineering team where steps to abide the criteria of executing and disseminating the communication notice of a change order, server OS upgrades, patching, etc.

All compute endpoint devices (with the exception of a few Apple iPhone and Macbooks) approximately 2,350 could be found in, and or managed by one of three tool sets, Systems Center Configuration Manager (SCCM), Systems Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM), or Systems Center Operations Manager (SCOM). While I wasn’t an engineer responsible for the install, setup, configure, and troubleshooting of SCCM. I am proficient in every sense of how I would need to be when it comes to carrying out and executing any tasks or functions at my level of use. Anytime I wasn’t scheduled and actively engaged in a project where I owned certain critical aspects that had time sensitive dependencies attached to a task, I was able to make contributions in other areas and reduce tickets numbers such as:

Scheduled maintenance of laptops, desktops, physical/virtual servers’ that were both setup on-prem, within a data center co-located, or operating as production VM’s in Azure Cloud.

2012R2 to 2019 Server OS upgrades.

Inventory assets and software.

Active Directory/GPO re-organization and restructuring and cleanup.

Patching and remediation.

Responding to alerts, notifications, and monitoring.

Automation (automating tasks when and where necessary and possible) namely around re-occurring scheduled tasks.

Virtual machine Hyper-V management and administration, including new builds.

Office365 & SharePoint (M365)

Due to an extremely fast and aggressive purchasing and M&A phase over the past 2-3 years saw the organization absorb 2 medium size companies and 1 small company. This presented many new challenges and would test the teams resolve to solution, engineer, and implement scalable changes effectively and expediently.

Under stiff time constraints, a medium sized companies entire SharePoint environment and its data had to be parsed, prepped, and staged for migrating. Before any SharePoint data was to move from source tenant to target tenant it needed to be screened for:

o Validity to be moved – did the data meet the threshold of importance.

o Did the age and or date of publication of data match the organizational data policy set forth with “Cold Data” if so, it was to be archived.

When coming to task of scrubbing and understanding the RBAC of all groups and individuals in a SharePoint environment being absorbed it first required a great deal of discovery. With enough PowerShell, I was able to put together a script to export all user accounts and group membership. However, Sharegate migration tool played an instrumental role here.

Identified a few sets of pilot data to bring across first (using Sharegate migration tool) to make sure that what was setup was indeed going to function and performing as needed and intended.

As the SharePoint migrations slowed to a conclusion, I began migrating users OneDrive data and user accounts/settings. In the days and weeks that followed, I took induvial, and supervisor approved requests to build SharePoint Team and Communication sites

MS TEAMS VOICE

I built out a phone tree within Microsoft Teams Voice that involved:

oPorting of 3 phone numbers from the previous company that got absorbed.

oCreating an Auto Attendant.

oCreating Call Queue.

oSourcing the needed and required licensing.

oCreating Resource accounts and assigning as needed/required.

oUploaded greeting incoming callers would receive.

oConfigured dial-by name directory

Azure Cloud

I alone was designated the singular person responsible for all aspects of the organizations Azure tenant and its many resources sprawling geographically from US East to Europe North, and Europe West regions. As the company maintained a small market share of clientele in the UK and in Q2 2022, very aggressive plans were set forth to expand its presence in the UK region, thus opening the floodgates to many things needing to be cleaned updated and scaled within the Azure tenant.

oEXTENSIVE work in Active Directory (On-Prem) and Azure Active Directory configuring and building Enterprise Apps too support SSO. Migrating Enterprise Apps from configurations built in ADFS on-prem to Azure cloud SAML/SSO.

oI created the organizational standard in writing and documenting the how-to process of upgrading all servers from 2012R2 to 2019. Which required the additional addressing of issues and matters such as:

Migrating Unmanaged disks to Managed Disks.

Converting VM’s in Availability Sets to Managed sets.

Troubleshooting Bitlocker ID, Recovery Key, to KeyVault issues.

VM resizing

Managing Azure Backup “BackupCenter”

Validating Backup Policies

Testing old pre-existing policies in Backup Vaults

Managing Blob Storage and containers

Configuring a test environment for VM’s to be tested and not affect anything else in the tenant.

Reviewing Network Security Group configurations and creating new configs as necessary.

Managing Azure Resources:

Snapshots from Blob VHD.

Creating Disks from Snapshots.

Creating VM’s from OS Disks, that were created from Snapshots

TeamLogicIT Central Phoenix – Lead Server Engineer/Account Manager

2/1/2017 – 4/1/2018

As lead Server Engineer I ran a team of three helpdesk support engineers and a CCNP Network Engineer.

Scoped projects, network/infrastructure project & upgrades, built proposals within the Autotask CRM.

Established/built, and in some case repaired damaged relationships (prior to me) with clients and customers.

Worked effectively from remote/at home location, on client site, and in office with the team, available always.

Worked in a 24 on call rotation and maintained this schedule.

Scoped, bid, and proposed hardware for clients.

Scoped, bid, and proposed timeline-oriented projects, scopes of work, and monthly service contracts.

Established new work flows and processes for the business, i.e. new workstation setup, new employee on boarding, new client onboarding/documenting process. Established bi-weekly in-house training schedule for the team.

Worked Extensively with server technologies: 2003, 2008, 2012, 2016 on the Hyper-V And VMWare virtual platforms.

I worked with our network engineer to set up login portal, and the segmentation of client data on separate networks and a management network for us as well.

Frequently handled Level 1, 2, and 3 escalations.

Setup, configure, and implement Sophos cloud Endpoint Advanced, & Intercept X antivirus solution.

Frequently configured setup all aspects of DNS, DHCP, GPO’s, Active Directory, & Virtualization.

I resolved tickets ranging anything from mouse/monitor not working, password resets, to domain migrations/domain function level elevations, to 4 different Office 365 migrations. I was an active ego-less member of a tight-knit well-oiled highly functioning team.

I identified the need for co-location, perhaps a full rack in a tier lll data center. After my initiated was taken to scout and scope quid pro quo for pricing, and we agreed on a deal, it was here we moved our own infrastructure – rack servers, firewalls, routers/switches. We also generated enough revenue from the rack and what we had in it in terms of client hosted services, to pay for the rack two more times after only our first 6 months.

Total Networks – Systems Engineer/Network Admin

10/2015 – 11/2016

Working as a managed services provider for a multitude of different clients, providing, 24x7 remote and as-needed onsite assistance through SaaS remote software and bi-weekly/monthly client site visits.

Responsible for the maintenance, security, documentation, monitoring, and reporting of the clients’ overall health, status, integrity, and security of; Domain Controller, AD, Exchange, Workstation/Peripherals, and Backup servers.

Lots of outward client-facing experience, not limited to the ticket queue and phones, but onsite visits, meeting with and building relationships/rapport with clients and customers. Professionally carry the image of the company 24/7 and supported clients accordingly.

24/7 on-call experience responsible for all tier 2/3 needs, these issues occasionally get escalated due to the need of supervisor access to the tools that fix these types of issues.

Client documentation tools and strategies are managed both through local and web-based tools, and updated on a regular basis, as needed, or as the information becomes available through bi-annual meetings.

I partake in a rigorous, and heavily regimented study program to attain 2 well-weighted certifications simultaneously.

I work in and on a personal IT server/workstation lab/range as part of an ongoing effort to stay fresh on the higher echelon of admin techniques, procedures, and functions, where I use VMWare Esxi, Hyper-V, and RDS connection to manage a virtual- domain environment.
