Employment History

Commissioned Officer, United States Army (1969 – 1980 / 1986 - 1996)

Helicopter Combat and Test Pilot (three hostile fire tours-of-duty: Vietnam, Panama, Desert Storm). I flew a variety of aircraft, both as a combat and test pilot. My duties in the latter involved the evaluation of new and refurbished aircraft, and I authored numerous highly technical operational guidelines related to specific airframe safety and performance. In the case of damaged or dysfunctional aircraft, I would interpret the written and voiced concerns of aircrews and then “translate” these maintenance issues into more technical jargon for engineers and technicians. I would then test-fly the repaired aircraft to ensure proper maintenance. Subsequently, I would discuss the repair and test flight results with the concerned pilots, describing in less technical terms how their maintenance issues were resolved.

Senior Air Operations Officer for Ecuador Earthquake Relief (Operation Abrendo Rutas). I was responsible for coordinating all inter-service air support for this operation, to include managing a fleet of C-141 and C-130 aircraft. My efforts resulted in the successful transit of 1,500,000 pounds of cargo and 8,000 emergency personnel between the United States and the Republic of Ecuador within a 90-day period. Subsequently, I authored a volume on logistical air operations for the United States Southern Command. This all resulted in my becoming the youngest officer in the command’s history ever nominated for the Legion of Merit (circa 1987).

Senior In-country Air Operations Officer for Vice-President Dan Quayle (Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Saudi Arabia). I was responsible for all aspects of the Vice-President’s in-country aerial transit during his 1990 Christmas visit to Saudi Arabia. This involved close coordination with the United States Secret Service, pilot and aircraft selection, route planning, airspace deconfliction, and tactical security.

Managing Editor and Contributing Author: US Army Aviation Officer’s Advanced Course. I acted as the lead editor for all submitted articles and curriculum materials, and I developed associated courseware to enhance the writing skills of young officer-pilots.

Curriculum Development Specialist and Teacher, Northern Navajo

Reservation (1980 - 1986)

Immediately following the Vietnam war, I left the military for six years to teach middle and high school reading and English Composition on the Northern Navajo Reservation in Arizona (before returning to my career in military aviation). I suspect that this experience (working with clients/students whose primary language was not English) may prove useful to you.

On the reservation, I introduced an adult literacy program to benefit the parents of my high school students.

Adult Literacy Lead Tutor for HiSAT, GED, ACT, SAT and TABE Crossroads Correctional Center (2011 – 2015)

I functioned as the institution’s lead tutor for high-school equivalency certification and college entrance examinations.

I co-authored a revolutionary in-house literacy program for adult male inmates.

Adult Literacy Tutor and Program Director (2015 – present)

For the past six years, I have acted as the volunteer Director and lead tutor in a community- based adult literacy program.

I developed courseware specific to the needs and skill levels of individual adult students.

My students achieved a mean increase in their reading ability of four grade-equivalent levels.

Online Tutor of English as a Foreign Language (2019 - Present)

I presently tutor 26 non-native speakers of English utilizing the Cafetalk platform. My students range in age from late teens to older established professionals, with instruction focusing on TOEIC and IELTS preparation as well as formal business and conversational English. My clients include diplomats from the Japanese Embassy in Washington DC.
