Experience

Process Engineer Aug 2022 – Apr 2023

Southwest Research Institute San Antonio, TX

• Designed, constructed, commissioned and started up a continuous pilot unit to explore process optimization for the production of a carbon-negative chemical feedstock

• Operated, maintained, improved, and troubleshooted continuous fixed adiabatic bed reactors, and adiabatic semi & batch stirred reactors units

• Sourced and planned the purchase of fittings, valves, materials, and equipment for pilot operations

• Created and updated P&IDs for multiple pilot units using Visio

• Developed standard operating/training manuals for pilot units

• Promoted process efficiency by developing excel sheets for calculating the refilling and emptying of vessels, pump error, conversion, and mass balance

• Performed PID tuning for ceramic heaters, calibrations for MFCs, and the validation of equipment

• Performed a root cause investigation and a HAZOP analysis

• Implemented process safety by setting safety alarms and PSVs for pilot units

• Performed bench scale experiments to explore chemical properties such as fouling and water solubility

• Compiled, verified, and reported process data to the client Education

Bachelor of Science, Chemical Engineering Graduation: May 2022 Texas Tech University Lubbock, TX

• 3.75/4.0 GPA

• Minor in Bioengineering and in Chemistry

Projects

Domestication of Penicillin Production

• Led a team to develop a sustainable and competitive process that improves the profitability of penicillin production through means of exploration with alternative feed sources, genetical enhancements, and implementation of newer process technologies

• Simulated end to end production of the antibiotic from its mold in SuperPro Designer

• Designed a P&ID for the fermenter unit and a BFD of the process operations

• Led a HAZOP analysis report on the proposed production process

• Performed a cost analysis in the form of a 17-year discounted cash flow analysis of the proposed solution, which yielded a 9 year earlier break-even period and a net present value of ~$63 million improvement Texas Tech – Morrow Glycol Pilot Plant

• Determined the value of the friction loss coefficient for a spool piece composed of various 90-degreee elbows and the discharge coefficient of an orifice plate to explore pressure loss within piping systems

• Determined the duty/operating point of the fluid delivery system through the development of the performance curve of a centrifugal feed pump and system curve of its corresponding loop

• Learned how to read and navigate P&IDS and isometric drawings in order to operate the unit Developed GUI for the Calculation of Fin Properties

• Developed a MATLAB code that calculates fin efficiencies based on user inputted parameters (fin type, physical measurements, thermal conductivity, and heat transfer coefficient)

• Built a graphical user interface using App Designer that will allow users without prior knowledge of heat transfer to easily input and receive desired values Skills

ASPEN HYSYS, ASPEN PLUS, MATLAB, SuperPro Designer, DAQFactory, JMP: Statistical Software, Chromeleon Chromatography Data System, CAMEO, MARPLOT, ALOHA, Visio, and Excel. Fluent in Spanish. Certifications
