Hi my name is Maryam and I am passionate, driven and motivated aspiring to work within the software and cybersecurity industry. I am always willing and eager to learn more and perfect my coding and mathematical skills in areas of software development and software security. I am always looking for experience in the software and cybersecurity industry so I can increase my knowledge of software and be able to take on any tasks given to me. This also because I believe gaining some experience in real life will help me improve my knowledge of software and security. Also, I will be working with people and I value teamwork as I believe that working as a team helps to improve our knowledge and mistakes. I have a strong technical knowledge developed through my academic studies. I also have team work and leadership skills developed through working at my university in a team and girl-guiding and through work experience at a pre-school. I had to work with many people at girl guiding and pre-school, which has given me a team-focused approach and the ability to take on different tasks with determination and confidence.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
I had taken a year or two out after taking my gcses to see what I really wanted to do and, in that time, I did develop a passion for coding and creating apps using coding languages like python. During my university studies, particularly my final year I worked as a software tester within my group where we created a diabetes app which calculated if a person has a healthy amount of insulin in their body using PowerShell.
Volunteer in Girl-guiding February 2018 – July 2019
I was working with girls aged from 10-14 where I had to give them team working tasks to do, mainly sports like hockey, or games like chess. I had developed a strong understanding of the importance of teamwork and leadership skills. There also was a time when the supervisor of the group was ill and I had to arrange the tasks for what the students had to do. That day I arranged a series of games ranging from hockey, chess, number games and acting. These were games according to the students interests as the supervisor told me what the activities the students were particularly interested. So, I arranged these activities and made sure the students were happy and working together as a group. I also made sure to include the students who don’t get involved in activities much to also be included in a group. All the students really enjoyed the activities and many of them were confident and made much more friends as I put the students into groups who were also with other people instead of their usual friends.
Teaching assistant, Company = Hop, Skip and Jump Pre - school July 2nd – July 16th 2015
I contributed in my work experience as a teaching assistant, ensuring that I help the staff organise the start of lessons, as well as tidying up the classroom and helping them end the day. I also ensured that every child contributed during lessons, but also that they had their lunch on time. I had to ensure the safety of each child, making sure that they did not use any hazardous things. I also helped each child with their work such as number work and made sure that they were listening to the teachers.
This helped me improve my team work skills as I worked as a team with the staff and did any task’s they gave me with confidence.
This also helped me improve my communication skills as I had to communicate with the staff and children during lessons or when helping them.
TECHNICAL SKILLS
Enhanced knowledge of using software’s like databases from Oracle Apex
Enhanced knowledge in using programming languages like Python, Java and JavaScript
I have experience in using Linux and PowerShell commands and also git-bash
Enhanced knowledge of using cryptographic algorithms as well as some cybersecurity and network protocols.
I have knowledge of using encryption and decryption algorithms which I found very interesting in the cryptography module I took in my final year of university. The Vigenère cipher method in particular was fun to use for encrypting text.
I have knowledge of using react native to code languages on using JavaScript and NetBeans where I used java to create my university project.
Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office programmes such as Word and PowerPoint and Excel.
I also have experience of using Net-beans with java swing
I have experience in using SQL and PHP languages
Language skills: Fluent in English, sariki, urdu
I also have some understanding of Arabic
I also have experience with using React native and visual studio code
EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AND INTERESTS
I went to NCS in 2016, for 2 weeks from June to august. We travelled to places like Norfolk, Manchester and did activities like sailing, rock climbing and even swimming. We were put into different groups of 4 people throughout the experience. This enhanced my communication skills and team work skills. After completing NCS I was more confident in working with people in teams.
I was team captain of a basketball team in my secondary school St Luke’s science and sports college.
My interests are coding, watching horror movies and reading scary stories.
For my mobile app university project, I used to react native to create a combined food delivery and uber app where users can order food according to their location and also have the option to get a ride from their location to another. In this project, although the time creating this project was short due to the deadline, I wasn’t able to add many features but I had learnt how to improve my coding skills and where my strengths are.
For my other mobile app project, I also used to react native to create a bowl scoring app where people could play and add the points they scored on each team. The people playing could be in two teams with over 100 bowling scores to win.
For my software development university project, me and my team created a diabetes app using PowerShell which would tell the user if their insulin level was okay or if they needed to change their diet. I was the developer in this team along with another developer in which we created the app. It was fun to work as a team of 5 people with different roles as we all helped and learned from each other which resulted in a really good outcome when we delivered the project on time and a god result.
For my university database assignment in second year, I had to assemble and write some data that could be used for a company that delivers vehicle rides for users. I enjoyed doing this project using SQL as I used many different commands and mathematical operations. The reason I enjoyed this is because I have a strong attention to detail and made sure all the data, I had written using the SQL language was accurate and up to date. I also enjoyed learning this language along with many other languages I have learnt during my time at university.
For my mobile app university project, I used android studio code to create a diary entry app which students could use to rate the book they had just read from their school and write any comments about the book and the date they started reading the book and finished reading the book.
