• Studies of the M. tuberculosis transcriptome during replication in type II alveolar epithelial cells. Suggests a paradigm shift in our understanding of the establishment of M. tuberculosis infection and novel strategies for vaccine development.
• Developed an in vitro model of the alveolar barrier to study primary M. tuberculosis infection. Provides a tool to study factors that directly influence the migration of M. tuberculosis across the alveolar barrier, i.e., primary infection.
• Analyzed the transcriptome of M. tuberculosis replicating in whole blood (from HIV- and HIV+ subjects). Demonstrated for the first time that M. tuberculosis can actively sense and exploit an immunocompromised environment for its benefit.
