ORGANIZER - meticulous, highly structured and organized COACH - helping people learn new skills, grow and develop their strengths. MASTERY - loves to learn and develop skills and abilities, developing expertise. COMMUNICATOR - listening, talking, sharing ideas and plans. RESPONSIBILITY - takes ownership for success of projects, always follows through. ANALYST - analyzes variables and scenarios to determine solutions.

# ORGANIZER

Firmly under control is your world – across the cultures to which you belong. Impeccably arranged, meticulous and orderly is not just what you do, it is who you are, from your dress to your desk to your thinking. Structuring your work and life is energizing and enriching, so much so that you can’t stop fine tuning, which increases your structure from great to flawless.

The jealously this arouses in the workplace is just a reflection of how difficult (even heinous) it is for those without your natural gift. For you, the process is as gratifying as the outcome. You know that it does not take more time to be organized. The most visible aspect of this talent is in the perfection of dress, time, and surroundings. What people sometimes miss is the clarity and form of your thinking process, which is consistent across contexts.

Thank your ORGANIZER theme for sustaining and promoting teams and organizational progress. You continuously provide the infra-structure to mark the path taken and pave the road ahead in perfect alignment with the goal. Challenge: For situations where the haphazard approach of others diminishes your potential for impact.

Once you become known as the icon of organization, you can become an unwelcome recipient of poor work, dumped at your door as an afterthought. Of course, you can manage the structure and organization necessary to rescue any project or team member. The occasional rescue among partners is fine, but your talent demands a better gig, one with respect and forethought where your gifts will be well-utilized for their true value.

Push to the beginning of projects/tasks to place yourself in a better position to lead in a way only you can. And share your gifts with team members and others who need to get started right. Even if they can’t sustain the process to your level of effectiveness, you’ll be making a difference.

How has ORGANIZER driven your thoughts, feelings or behavior today? What do you take pride in organizing?

# COACH

They call you teacher, partner, developer, coach. For you it’s the drive to see people learn and develop new capabilities. You seize any opportunity to provide recognition of growth or accomplishment, to suggest new ideas/techniques, and to offer your support. COACH isn’t just the role of manager or leader, people with this talent actively invest in and contribute to the success and growth of everyone around them. Some might say, they have no opportunities for coaching as they are not yet managers. But COACH means the person has been “making people better” from their earliest encounters. The Coach doesn’t start with what’s wrong, but rather with what is working and how to enhance it. A positive focus on creating better capabilities. There are few other talents so responsible for generating impact on the individual’s growth and loyalty. WE all want to get better, and those with COACH actively engage us to develop. COACH likely means you seek out new ideas and learning (particularly if MASTERY is a part of your strengths), and this adds richness to your efforts with team members, customers, and others.

Challenge: For situations where you are paid to produce, but not to coach or help others learn.

Highly competitive arenas may not always structure in the coaching that is necessary to develop outstanding performers. You don’t need structure, but in situations like this, your own performance may suffer slightly as you support those who need to learn more

– or are just starting.

It would be less frustrating for you if your efforts were recognized at least informally, but that is often unlikely (except from those you have helped). For your own satisfaction, recognize that this talent is connected to your values and represents a contribution that will grow with the accomplishments of your beneficiaries. At some point, you may wish to gravitate to managerial/leadership roles where your gift will have access to better support and can flourish accordingly.

How has COACH driven your thoughts, feelings or behavior today? Who are you coaching and supporting?

# MASTERY

Learning is fun. Faced with something new to you, brings energy to your day. MASTERY is about confident, pro-active learning. You are drawn to learning opportunities, new ideas, discoveries, thoughts and books, activated by the process itself and the accomplishment of mastering it.

Are you always pursuing a new certification? Learning another language? Mastering a new game? Earning another degree? Whatever the object of your talent, the drive makes you hungry for more. Some with MASTERY have been asked if they are EVER getting out of school and into the “real world.”

MASTERY adds richness to the workplace and team as your passion helps others benefit from the “pearls.”

MASTERY is independent of FOCUS, but the dynamics are significant. Knowing how your MASTERY fires is important insight for self-development and finding your best cultural fit.

FOCUSED MASTERY leads to deep and pertinent expertise, in one’s field or area of interest. The person seeks more depth of understanding in the subject and the peripheral areas.

UNFOCUSED MASTERY is an explosion of interest in learning all things for the joy of discovery and feeling of accomplishment it brings. These are ranges (not categories) and they are helpful to describe the path MASTERY takes. Extreme FOCUSED/MASTERY may lead to preeminence in one’s chosen field

(science or chess or gaming, etc.) Non-Evident FOCUSED/MASTERY may lead to changing series of expertise (Jeopardy) from science to chess to gaming to x. Challenge: For situations where there’s nothing left to learn, or it feels like that. If your environment is relatively stable, unaffected by technology or marketplace dynamics, and you are an expert, you will likely need to look outside the organization for stimulation.

The good news is that in most industries and organizations, the marketplace and technologies are changing so rapidly most can’t keep up. Edge as close as you can to the change, where the opportunities to learn will be more abundant. Volunteer for task forces where new possibilities must be explored and selected. How has MASTERY driven your thoughts, feelings or behavior today? What is your most compelling vision?

# COMMUNICATOR

When this theme is dominant, you can’t stop engaging. Every person, every situation is a way to connect, to listen to and learn from others. The exchange is what’s exciting to you, getting people to open up and tell you what they think and how they feel. This talent is less about telling and more about asking – becoming a catalyst for communication and understanding.

There could be some who see conversation as distraction and noise; this fails to recognize the fundamental contribution of your talent - helping people express their true point of view. This is the domain of the COMMUNICATOR, creating feelings of being understood.

You know the secret to effective communication is not the ability to speak but the impact on the listener, who needs to become a full partner in the communication process. You may love to speak (formally and informally) but you aren’t the old school orator focused on the sound of his/her voice, but the spirit of shared understanding. Challenge: For situations when leadership focuses energy on “telling” rather than asking. The traditional organizational hierarchy impresses upon leaders the importance of their role in setting direction, vision and goals. This tends to stress a more “old school”

(command and control) view of leaders as directors of action, this may be a bit frustrating for COMMUNICATORS.

Recognize that some talents really are more about the “telling” than “engaging” and staying in that framework is natural. Offer/volunteer to provide thought provoking questions – or emcee the meeting to bring people into the conversation. You know success depends upon individuals feeling heard and acting as owners of the culture or the change.

If there is little willingness to ask in the workplace, seek avenues where you can bring engaging ways to promote meaningful dialogue and ownership. The response of team members will be naturally reinforcing and may help you lead the way. How has COMMUNICATOR driven your thoughts, feelings or behavior today? What ideas/plans will you discuss with others?

# RESPONSIBILITY

You own it all. Doing what you say you will do is the starting point of this talent. Making sure those in your line of sight (or even beyond it) are delivering what is promised falls into your psychological ownership.

Some with this talent in abundance commiserate about never being able to let go – or about its “non-trendy” name. But like the famous commercial, with RESPONSIBILITY

“you’re in good hands” for whatever is required.

Voids in service delivery or teamwork are seen as opportunities for spontaneous action. You have been known to “follow-thru” and /or “follow-up” on deliverables unrelated to your role or team. Meeting expectations isn’t achievement based. It is value based for you.

Thank your RESPONSIBILITY for helping you and your organization gain the reputation for delivering what you say you will. There is no other way to build trust among people and with those you serve. Yes, it is the talent that never sleeps, but that is its power to build trust.

Challenge: For situations where people’s ownership is limited to their specific role and service/partnership suffers.

Honor your RESPONSIBILITY and seek out those who appreciate the power it brings to partners, teams, and organizations. There is no substitute that will work for situations where people don’t deliver against the promise.

Clarify the boundaries – what you and others own. This will help you refrain from pulling all the obligations into yourself.

How has RESPONSIBILITY driven your thoughts, feelings or behavior today? What responsibilities are the most satisfying to you?

# ANALYST

Approaching situations fires perspective. All things examined dispassionately in methodical ways; historical, evidential, dispassionate analysis energizes you. Stripping out the facts from the marketing fluff and tracing likely outcomes is automatic, more a way of experiencing than a learned procedure. Because the process of discovery and analysis is inherently energy producing, this is a theme that drives the mastery of analytical methods, tools, ideas.

The analytical never stops even in situations which don’t actually scream out for it

(movies, events), so it’s likely you have taken some heat for “taking the fun out of stuff.” What can amaze you still is how others can’t see the unsupported generalizations in arguments, or the possible scenarios resulting from various decisions. Like other dominant talents, ANALYST permeates your experience in a unique and highly valuable way. The challenge is often that others lead more from emotion in contrast to the rational frame from which you view events. Maybe this difference can be perceived as negative by some, but that perception stems from their TalentSet more than yours; critical thinking isn’t biased.

Thank your ANALYST: while the excitement is high and the ACTIVATORS are pushing for movement your talent may slow the process and could very well be the difference between success and failure. All the more reason to be strategic in its use. Challenge: For situations where others don’t appreciate your logic. While those around you may feel “drained” by the scientific process, asking you to turn it off is draining to you. It may make you feel numb. While you could hold back on the analysis of ice cream scoops sizes at the birthday party, it might be better to let your talent flow and just not detail the process. You revel in the interconnections and logic, and it’s tempting to share that – but sometimes the solution is more important: Chocolate.

Leading with the solution will increase your credibility and impact. It will also make others ask about the process that yielded it.

How has ANALYST driven your thoughts, feelings or behavior today? What has fired your critical thinking?
