Surgical First Assistant Experience

Perform in a team relationship the care of the intra-operative patient, working closely with the surgeon in a hands-on capacity, helping the surgeon by handling vital tasks to produce a safe and effective surgical experience.

Aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions to help the surgeon and surgical team carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient.

Assume responsibility for setting up and passing instruments, holding retractors, assisting the surgeon, and assisting with circulating duties, as necessary.

Observe and maintain aseptic technique at all times.

Assist in preparing the operating room for procedure, obtaining the needed equipment and supplies.

Maintain working knowledge of assembly and function of surgical instrumentation and equipment.

Assist with skin preparation and draping of patient.

Complete required sponge, needle, and instrument counts.

Gown and glove members of surgical team.

Anticipate the needs and instruments of the surgeon during an operation.

Handle and care for surgical specimens according to policy and procedure.
