Anatomic Pathology Lab Specialist (Full-time) June 2022 – January 2023

•Sign Pathology specimen out of specimen logbook verify all information (label) and parts

•Accession specimens, from surgeries, in the operation room, for the Pathologist Assistant to complete grossing. After grossing, the specimen is given to a histotechnologist for the process of embedding into a paraffin block and creating unstained slides.

•Responsible for organizing remaining specimen, after grossing is completed, to ensure specimen is not disposed of until pathology report has been created along with additional weeks/ months (depending on the type of specimen).

•Communicate with other hospital personnel (doctors, nurses, surgical technicians, surgeons, etc.) regarding patients results, and specialty testing at other facilities.

•Assist pathologists with pathology consultations (second opinions) send-outs, navigate special testing menus using requisition forms and/or online sites, and direct appropriate calls (froze specimen in OR, questions regarding pathology report, and permission for send-outs/ special testing) to pathologists. C.

•Maintain inventory control by placing orders for formalin, alcohol, xylene, special testing boxes (NeoGenomics, Michigan Medicine, etc.), and cassettes and lids to hold grossed specimen.

•Disinfect the morgue, place amputations in morgue immediately after grossing, and dispose of dated amputations in appropriate biohazard bins

•Organize biohazard waste area for Stericycle pickup

•Complete clerical duties (record keeping for specimen send-outs to reference labs/ neighboring hospitals, sorting and filing insurance forms/ copy of completed requisition form/ faxed paperwork/ pathology reports/ specimen requests, file paraffin blocks and slides in sequential order, answer/ route phone calls, data entry (scan pathology consultation and pathology reports), sort and track incoming and outgoing deliveries

Cytotechnologist (Part-time)

•Sign Cytology specimen out of specimen logbook verify all information (label) and parts

•Gross specimen through EPIC software (color, measure in cc, texture)

•Pour specimen under laboratory hood by following necessary protocols and procedures for each specimen

•Complete spin cycle on Cytology specimen for

•Dispose of dated biowaste using biohazard bags/ labs/ assigned bins and communicate with Biowaste disposal team members

•Preserve of specimen in assigned fridge until all testing is completed, using CytoLyt as needed

•Maintain clean solution for stain prepping and thin prep of Cytology slides

•Maintain cleanliness of laboratory hoods, Tissue-Tek, and Hologic machines

•Create Cytology blocks using HistoGel and place in container overnight with solution for rooting

•Place stained slides in assigned pathologist box with necessary paperwork

Lab Coordinator (Part-time)

•Oversee clerical duties for Pathology, Microbiology, Chemistry, and Histology labs

•Assist Lab Director as needed

•Communicate with Pathology, Microbiology, Chemistry, and Histology lab staff/ doctors/ nurses/ outside facilities regarding consultations/ reports

•Scan patient information from lab testing, consultations, and reports

•Create monthly schedules assigning duties for doctors (Cytology, operating room for frozen specimen, malignant patients presentation conferences, and biopsy grossing)
