Presented paper at annual COMSOL users’ conference entitled, Power Transistor Heat Sink Design Trade-offs, in cooperation with two members of the University of Hartford’s Engineering faculty. Paper discussed heat transfer process in a TO-220 transistor package and pointed out the benefits of certain design features. Conclusions: A significant increase in useful life can be achieved though a relatively small decrease in operating temperature.

KEY PROJECTS

Utilized ETAP software to design power systems and estimate costs of project. Initiated queries and produced regular reports.

Designed and fabricated a power transistor: Utilized COMSOL multiphysics application to program ZETEX ZXTN2020 power transistor to perform heat transfer measurement functions, including radiation, convection, and heat sink. Perform measurements of gradient temperature, ambient temperature, and mash. Built and tested bread-board prototype prior to full demonstration in class. Gained circuit design experience at the device-level.

Designed and fabricated a DC-DC voltage converter using MULTISIM software. Designed converter for maximum efficiency and measured power and voltage losses at various voltages. Prototype demonstrated and Evaluated in class.

Designed and built a solar power system, using MULTISIM. Photovoltaic output was 50 VAC, stepped down to 5 V DC.

Designed, built, tested and demonstrated a Smart Air station, capable of selecting optimal tire pressures for any model automobile on the market. Collaborated with a cross-disciplinary design team to design both hardware and embedded software, using LabView, a Motorola 6008USB series microprocessor, and JAVA.
