Formal teaching:

Throughout the past 18 years, I have been an assistant/associate/full professor in the department of surgery, division of cardiothoracic surgery, section of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery. I am involved in the teaching of cardiology fellows, cardiothoracic surgery fellows, nurses, respiratory therapists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, residents, medical students, perfusionists, and international physicians at both the pediatric and adult hospitals. Although Advent Health is a private institution without a full complement of medical and surgical subspecialty training, this role continues with the existing ancillary personnel.

Clinical Teaching:

As a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon, I have responsibilities in and out of the operating room. My day begins at 0700 and ends at approximately 1800. During this time I am responsible for the cardiac surgical patients in the cardiac units and operating rooms. In addition, I am or have been responsible for teaching of cardiology fellows, cardiothoracic surgery fellows, nurses, respiratory therapists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, medical students, perfusionists, and other physicians in training. Daily rounds include discussion of medical and surgical management of each of my patients and lasts approximately 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the afternoon. The goal is to teach about the anatomy and physiology of the heart defect, along with the surgical management options and consequences. An overhead camera is available at all times, so teaching can be shared with all of the operating room personnel, trainees, and transmits to the pediatric CVICU. I am in the operating room 6-8 hours daily, 2-4 days a week. Although Advent Health is a private institution without a full complement of medical and surgical subspecialty training, this role continues with the existing ancillary personnel.

Clinical teaching also occurs in other venues, primarily during our weekly and monthly meetings. These include the following:

Cardiac Surgical and Cardiac Catheterization Conference

Morbidity and Mortality Conference

Cardiac Service Line Meetings

Quality Meetings

Supervisory/Research Teaching

As a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon, I also have had responsibilities teaching and mentoring in academic research.

Faculty mentor – Emory University cardiothoracic surgery fellows

Faculty mentor – Emory University general surgery residents

Faculty mentor – Emory University medical students

Faculty mentor – Emory University undergraduates

Faculty mentor – Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta pediatric cardiology fellows

Faculty mentor - Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta perfusionists

Faculty mentor – Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta NP students
