As a Patient Access Representative I work in the Emergency room at Truman Medical Center. I register the patients that are presenting to the ER. I create new medical record numbers, load the necessary information into the patient chart, modify, edit and correct data entry errors while comforting the patients that are coming at such a critical time. I also receive the patient insurance information and make sure I apply the knowledge I have been taught about insurance to properly run the insurance and process the required copay when applicable. I work insurance reports extensively to ensure that the information including but not limited to MBI numbers are correct when submitting claims to the different companies with an extreme focus on Medicare and Medicare Replacement Plans. This is a fast-paced position that requires knowledge, accuracy, courtesy and attention to detail. I work with a small but vital team so communication is key to ensuring nothing is overlooked where the patient or their accounts are concerned. There are times when dealing with traumatically ill patients, their families, EMTs and Police that I need to employ a level of sensitivity and patience that is required to get the information needed to legally verify the identities of the patient while working to not aggravate anyone closely involved with the event. I continuously strive to maintain the delicate yet professionally firm balance between doing the work and remaining compassionate.

As a Patient Access Scheduling Representative I access patient files to make appointments, verify times and modify their schedules. I also reach out to the Doctors, Nurses, Social Workers in house to ensure that the quality of care and needs of the patients are being met per the messages received in my office. I work diligently to ensure that the physician unique specifications are met and patients are placed on their roster per the guidelines given. I work for seven surgery clinics and so I must ensure that I stay updated in the many changes that come and govern myself accordingly. I also send direct messages to the nurses and doctors to clear convey the needs of the patient and explain the return of call process and timeline to the patients. I report daily to my manager any needs that our patients have that they (management) require. Finally, I work many back up queues that come in daily from throughout the hospital to maintain the proper scheduling order as needed per our doctors and patient base. I also send prescription refill requests to our doctors for our patient upon request.
