Over the past four years I have been at the helm of implementing a comprehensive Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS) approach that is responsive to both groups and individual students. It consists of intuitive structures, including dedicated teams that take students' socio-emotional needs into account when triangulating data, engaging in student-based inquiry, communicating with families and developing support plans with students and families. Its success rests on each teacher being responsible for implementing all Tier 1 interventions, and serving as an advisor, helping to form authentic relationships with students. There are 20 interventions at this level that range from a restorative conference, the proximity method, a phone call home, to teaching explicit coping skills. All support teams are responsible for implementing all Tier 2 and 3 interventions. Interventions range from peer-mediations, a behavior contract, an attendance contract, to performing a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA).

The cohesion of all structure and subsystems of our larger MTSS has proven to be successful with me leading a full implementation of PBIS, a well-defined Attendance Policy, clear behavior expectations in the form of behavior matrices for all areas in the school building, and a comprehensive system and criteria for placing students on tiers according to academic, attendance and behavior outcomes in order to provide them with individualized interventions according to need in real time.

Additionally, I supervise the Arts Department, World Language Department and serve as the cohort 2025 supervisor. To promote rigorous student outcomes, while providing a common way to authentically assess students through an integrated lens, I coached my teams in developing a skills based rubric and aligned vertical curriculum. Cultivating writing, discourse and creativity through an artistic lens was our north star. Over the course of 5 months, I successfully put structures in place with my cohort teachers and cohort management team that yielded a 20% increase in the number of students with a 80%+ GPA compared to the previous cohort.

During the 2013-2014 school year, I held a unique split position where I was the assistant principal for an elementary school of approximately 350 students, as well as the intermediate school these students matriculate to, which serves approximately 1,000 students. From 2014 to 2019, the position shifted to only the middle school, JT Lambert. I was responsible for many initiatives, including: The JTL SWPBS Committee, JTL’s first Student Ambassador Committee, Discovery First systems of teaching and learning, and serving on the Teacher Effectiveness Committee. Being that “systems management” is one of my strengths, I developed an “Intervention/Progress Monitoring” booklet to address student recidivism with behavior and attendance and streamline our child study process.

Reading High School is the largest school in the Reading School District, housing 3,500 students in the tenth through twelfth. I directly supervise the students and teachers in the Success Academy, which is a specialized, comprehensive program that is geared toward giving students the opportunity to earn the necessary credits to either be classified as actual tenth, eleventh, or twelfth graders or to graduate.

Thirteenth and Union is the largest elementary school in the Reading School District, housing 950 students from PK-5th grade. Upon being hired the school was in “School Improvement I.” To ensure the school makes AYP for the 2011-2012 school year and is in “good standing” a few measures that were taken include: A school vision and mission was developed with staff that aligns with the district’s strategic plan. I led the staff in developing a school-wide strategic plan that included 3 goals based upon our PVAAS data. To ensure that the staff is continuously focusing on instructional and learning priorities, teachers are involved in 3 common planning meetings per month geared towards data analysis, curriculum development and looking at student work. A few accomplishments to date are: Ranking second in the district amongst all elementary schools in reading (data taken from 2012 4-Sight assessments), a partnership with Albright College, and a 10% academic growth from last year in reading and math for the ELL and IEP subgroups (data taken from 2012 4-Sight assessments).

Thomas Ford is a small elementary school located in Reading, PA, serving slightly more than 450 students. A few accomplishments are: Making AYP in both math and reading for the 2009-10 school year, continuous growth in math, ongoing goal setting with teachers, sustaining a school-wide behavior system, and organizing and maintaining the school’s first parent-led PTO.

M.S. 217 is a small middle school located in the south Bronx, serving slightly fewer than 300 students. My main responsibilities included organizing the school, resources and community for the benefit of students.

M.S. 298 is a small middle school located in the South Bronx. M.S. 345 is a small middle school located in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Both schools serve slightly fewer than 300 students, in grades 6-8. During my tenure I participated in all aspects of the principalship, including developing a math curriculum for grades 6 through 8, supervision of the ELA coach and teachers and parent and community relationships.

2006-2007 Fine Arts Teacher Shawnee Academy, East Stroudsburg, PA

Shawnee Academy is a unique alternative school, with a residential and day school program. It serves children in both special education and general education, ranging in ages from 8 through 21. Based upon the students’ Individualized Educational Plans and learning profiles, I developed an interdisciplinary art curriculum centered on project-based learning. I organized the school’s first student beautification committee, whose murals became permanent fixtures on campus. In 2006, I attended a series of professional development based on strategies for de-escalating crisis using non-physical restraint.

All three schools, West Elementary, Bruce-Monroe Elementary and Garrison Elementary School were Title I schools located in the center of Downtown DC. As an art teacher, my responsibilities included: Utilizing community resources by having student art exhibitions for parents and the community in neighborhood centers, integrating technology into the curriculum by having students use Photoshop to enhance their exhibitions with graphic art, serving as a member of the Pupil Personnel Team, where I was responsible for contacting parents, as well as gathering data to be used in devising intervention plans. In 2003, in addition to receiving Certificates of Appreciation after entering the "Cherry Blossom: Saluting a World Class City, Communities and Friendship" contest, my students gained a heightened sense of community awareness.
