As part af a hammer crew. Consisting of a hammer operator and crew leader and his assistant, and 3 to 6 welders depending on the size of the job. Crew installed the very first step in creating a oil or gas well which is installing the conductor pipe. On a drilling location a pipe 24 inch diameter on up to 60 inch. 40 ft long joints of pipe are joined by welding and driven into the formation to a predetermined depth with specified blow count. Then cut off and a flange welded on top. The pipe is divided in even spaces each welder assigned a section to complete. This pipe varies from 1 inch 2 inches taking anywhere from 1 to 6 hrs. As a employee at Frank's we were 24 hrs call 7 days a week. Predominantly worked at offshore drilling locations but did include the occasional land job. Fitter helper, welder

Duties were to assist in the fabrication of drilling rigs used in the oil and gas Industry. In conjunction with a fitter to cut parts from metal and place them in the correct location. Similar to a carpenter cutting boards to build a house. My skill was to place small welds to hold the parts in place. After 3 months I was promoted to a beginner welder. Within the year I was promoted twice and upon leaving I'd achieved 3rd class welder. This meant my skill level was that I possessed the ability to perform welds all ares of structure of the project being built. During my employment I was called upon to weld using different processes such as mig welding, a process that speeds productivity and was used wherever possible, it's not practical in areas where climbing and working on scaffolding. After 1 year I was offered a position to work in the oil industry. Which my skill was tested by demonstrating my ability also know as certification. Something a welder is called upon to do many times throughout their career.
