DUNG LY
Mainframe Developer
CURRENT SITUATION
After a long break, I am looking for a job.
In 2018, I retired from the NFCU and traveled, sight scenes for about 2 years. Then I had to stop traveling due to Covid 19 situation, stayed home, and worked on my garden. That was nice but I missed work. I want to go back to work.
Think about back to work, my 30 years plus of experience in mainframe applications development, from design to coding, testing, implementation, and support vividly came up. Cobol is one of my favorite computer languages. I started coding Cobol in the year 1978 with Commercial Credit bank in Baltimore. It was the reported programs, pretty simple. Later on, I had to deal with 1-dimensional, 2-dimensional, and then 3-dimensional. It was exciting. I continued exploring and working with any computer languages, Fortran, Assembler, Cobol, RPG… whichever languages were required for the jobs. I could train myself and go on from there. I worked with financial banking, loan, and ledger applications to insurance annuity, to the secondary mortgage market, and back to banking/credit union.
Among the companies that I worked for, the Navy Federal Credit Union is the company that gave me so many different types of experience.
Please my resume work history from 1980 to 1985 (Navy Federal Credit Union - Programmer Analyst) I participated in the project IBM - DOS (Disk Operation System) to MVS (Multiple Virtual Storage) conversion. I had to work with so many JCL, and Procs, create them on the test side, test after test, and backup/restore files constantly. 95% code is written in Cobol, and about 5% code is Assembler.
During this period NFCU used “Total_Database” which later on was replaced by the VSAM file. I had a chance to learn the VSAM file and gain a lot of working experience with it.
I left the NFCU in the year 1985 and I returned the year 2006, the company tripled its employees and continued to grow. I have been assigned to work on various projects (please see my tasks from 2006 to 2018). While working on these tasks, I quickly learned ChangeMan. It’s a source code manager in the z/OS mainframe. The existing applications are still used VSAM files for data storage but some new applications were created with the DB2 database. This was my chance to learn DB2 and worked with it.
My best skill is ‘self-training’. I was able to learn it from the book, looked at the program source codes, and figured out what needs to be done,
I started from a difficult situation, like learning the Assembler computer language, and learning how to read the ‘Dump codes’ from the computer to identify the error. That was not easy. I also remember I worked with a database where I had to keep track of the address value of that record and add its record length to locate the next record. But the road is getting easier for me.
