Resume:

C O V E R L E T T E R

To Whom It May Concern,

As a read the Senior Data Analyst position at Varsity Tutors, I thought I was reading a job description made for me. I love learning new things and the mission from the company aligns very well with my own curious nature. I, like your CEO, Chuck Cohn, excelled in school thanks to the guidance of amazing tutors and my hard work. Nowadays, I am a business data professional who loves to figure out how things work and learn new tools to help turn large sets of data into the answers the business needs. I believe because of my background I can be a great asset to Varsity Tutors and I feel it would be a great environment for me to continue my journey in data analytics after a professional hiatus to take care of my family during the pandemic and subsequent move.

I am self motivated and love learning. I've taught myself SQL, python and have recently started diving into machine learning (ML). My thirst for knowledge drove me to build a project using Ted Talks website, one of my favorite sources of inspiration. I scraped the data, joined with other sources, applied ML techniques to understand and predict well performing talks and built a simple recommendation engine to suggest future talks. If you are interested in learning more, please look for the details in the Projects section of my resume. I am passionate about analytics. I have always found ways to bring and grow that area, even when my core responsibilities were not directly related to data analytics. For example: while working as a Community Manager at MapR, a big data startup bought by Hewlett-Packard, I took on a side project to create an in-house eating-your-own-dog-food analytics infrastructure that ran in a hybrid cloud and on-prem environment to process multiple data sources with open source software. The project allowed us to share insights across the company while saving 80k USD worth in visualization tools licenses, for which I was awarded the MapR Star Award in 2016 and promoted to Analytics Manager. I am super excited to learn more about your team, but I honestly believe your company can benefit from my skills in the following areas:

• Cross-function Team Management & Project Management. I've managed people and driven projects across departments, collaborating to build & launch projects. Managing timelines and multitasking is second nature to me.

• Customer voice & Marketing Research. I have served as the customer liaison in many previous roles, feeding insights from qualitative and quantitative researches into actionable product plans in industries of healthcare, communications, technology and more.

• Quick learner & resourceful. I have taught myself Linux, SQL and Python over the years. I love new tools and figuring out how to use the data collected.

I am confident that this passion will translate into success for your team and sincerely hope I can contribute as a valuable member. It would be a privilege to discuss with you any open opportunity that may align with my skills & interests in more detail. I’m happy to coordinate a call whenever is most convenient for you. Thank you for your time, and I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Ali Alvarez
