Duties and Responsibilities

This includes working at Suprachem Coke ovens Desalination plant/ V3/ Vaal Dam /Bio plants as an individual and also as a team member at MTP and Reverse Osmosis plant:

•Maintaining safety in the plant, emergency safety showers etc.

Duties and responsibilities:

At Mackinnon Chain I started as assistant chain maker, loading raw materials (coil) on to the machine, housekeeping and quality check by inspecting defaults in a chain making process. I was later signed as an operator and a trainee chain maker, operating a machine and use of hand tools/ Vanier in the production for machines set up execution, record data to be kept for CMI chain making instruction manual and shift logbook. Performed tests/counting scrap, putting info on the control panel/settings on welder heads and other actions under actual operating conditions and adjust settings accordingly. We used different materials for different customer uses, copper wire/

Germiston scaw under Heggie Wire and Strand I started at commercial department as an operator of a wire drawing machine (bench maker /certified wire drawer ),using instruments like micrometer’s and Vanier for quality and reducing scrap, increasing efficiency. We used a back rod coil depending on the diameter of the rod on a job card, the wire rod will be drawn by a series of dies and blocks in the machine,adhering to all SOP’s requirements, checking gauges for pressure on machine feed and on blocks/ water levels and motor amps,wire is to be drawn until per customer order size 1.30mm was the minimum finishing die, mostly for bedding spring wire and back rod at 5.50mm etc. while on the other heavy drawer machine our back rod was 18.00mm die size and at 14.00mm finishing size for car manufacturing spring wire industries.

Commercial department was producing for largely local customers on bedding/ lintel wire /galvanized wire /and copper wire.

Due to shortages of staff I was given an opportunity to go and train at construction department /and stranding. I became a winder at stranding machines making ropes from 12.70mm strand to compact steel at 18.00mm strands for bridges and crane hoists and lifts to mention a few. A capstan stacks strand on a take-up and a winder pulls and rolls using traverse for a pattern lay, when targeted length is achieved will then cut/grind the rope and use a strapping machine to wrap a finished product (cheese/bobbins), quality department stamps QA stamp to a finished product taken by a forklift to off shore ship containers for external customers.
