Dear Detective Gist,

I am writing you today with a sincere proudness, and honor to write a letter of recommendation on behalf of Ivan Roldan and his desire to be a part of the Lakewood Police Explorer program.

Ivan and were introduced virtually (I’ll get to that in a second) back in October of 2018 through the Denver Kid’s program- https://www.denverkids.org/ . Meeting virtually wouldn’t be such a surprise in today’s world, but back in 2018 it was ahead of its time.

As part of the Denver Kids program, all mentors and mentees went through training (individually) and then they were all brought together on matching day. At matching day they told us one of the mentees couldn’t make it due to a work commitment. Instead that student made a video that all the mentors watched talking about himself and his interests. That student was Ivan.

I remember vividly Ivan’s video and even back then he mentioned that he had interest in law enforcement and potentially joining the military. This stuck out to me because part of the reason I decided to give back with the Denver Kids program was in honor of my grandfather who had recently passed and was a vet himself.

While it was great to get to know all the other mentees in person, I knew Ivan and I were a perfect match and I put him down as the mentee I thought I could connect best with. The rest is history and Ivan and I have established not only a very caring mentee/mentor relationship, but more importantly a lifelong friendship.

Since we were introduced, we have laughed, we have cried, we have grown, we have taught each other, we have snowboarded, we have hiked, we have laughed (again), and created memories that we will both always remember. There are always bumps a long the road, but it has been an absolute pleasure spending all that time with Ivan and watching him grow into the man he is today. And that man is someone who I think would be the perfect candidate for your program.

Ivan asked me to help him learn more about programs that were available to him a few months ago so that he could explore a potential career in law enforcement further, and even though we have always talked about this interest, I asked him why he was ready now and he said, “I just want to give back and help people.”

This answer stuck with me because if someone asked me that question when I was 17, I would have probably said something juvenile, like “because I want to drive fast with lights on”. But that is just who Ivan is; he carries himself with a level of respect and the biggest of hearts that is far more advanced than his age. This is evident in his respect and interactions with his family, his drive in working a full time job while balancing the rigors of high school, and doing it all with a positive attitude.

When Ivan asked me to help find programs to learn more about this career, I told him I would do whatever I could to help because he would be a great police officer someday and I know if the shoe was on the other foot he would go above and beyond to help me. When we were introduced to Sergeant Adrian Alderete by Adam Paul and we learned more about your program, Ivan’s eyes lit up and he was so excited and encouraged to learn more.

That attitude, excitement, hard work, initiative, respect, and most importantly, Ivan’s sincere desire to help his fellow man is why I am honored to write this letter in full support of Ivan and his application into your program.

Respectfully Yours,

Sean Kulzer
