Independent Research under Professor Cantay Caliskan

● The City sought to efficiently use data to reach its transportation planning and safety improvement goals such as improving quality, connectivity, accessibility, and safety to achieve a fully accessible network for pedestrians of all ages and people with disabilities.

● The goal of the project was to analyze images of road intersections and detect specific features including crosswalks, curb ramps, and low-quality crosswalks, assessed as part of the Pedestrian Environmental Quality Index.

● Used an object detection algorithm that uses neural networks to provide real-time object detection, treating object detection as a simple regression problem by taking an input image and learning the class probabilities and bounding box coordinates.

● University of Rochester - Computer Science Department Using U.S. Census Data to Predict Voter Turnout

An Application of Statistical and Machine Learning Methods Jan 2021-May 2021

Worked under the direction and guidance of Professor Yusuf Bilgic.

● Used supervised and unsupervised methods, as well as feature selection, to assess survey response data from the U.S. census bureau and create a model that attempts to accurately predict the likeliness of an individual to vote.

● The SVM (support vector machine) and logistic regression models trained using labor force data from the U.S census bureau were able to predict if an individual will vote with approximately 87% accuracy and 90% recall.

● The results of the research paper were peer-reviewed and published as a student study. I gained valuable skills and a greater understanding of the research process. Campus Leadership Activities
