Construction Materials Technician

June 2020 – November 2020

- Assignments require the CMT to locate the file associated with the construction project. The file held any calculations, instructions or manuals required to understand the construction project.

- Responsible for concrete slump test, air content test, and casting. The CMT must prepare all appropriate equipment and load the company vehicle with the equipment. Testing or calibrations of the equipment must be performed before it can be brought to the field for performance. The CMT is required to report to the construction site and sample the concrete being poured. The concrete must be collected in the middle of the pouring process and the tests being performed is a time sensitive process to ensure that the Project Manager and Concrete Truck Driver will be notified of failed results before the pour is complete. I experienced concrete pours and performed tests that were used mostly for footings, walls, and piles.

- Collect records of data of a pile driver by counting the BPM (Blows Per Minute). The types of pile drivers that must be observed are the pneumatic, hydraulic and diesel hammer pile drivers. Specifically, the Michels Manitowoc machines were mostly used to perform impact hammer pile driving on the Komatsu Manufacturing Building and Office Building Project.

- Collect records of data of an auger drill by observing the depth of drilling performed using the desired units.

- Perform rebar inspections.

- Lab time included sieve analysis and concrete compression tests. The Sieve analysis required the certified CMT to report to the construction project and sample the soil in the specified location for geotechnical data. Concrete compression tests were performed after the concrete was casted from the field and brought into the lab to cure. Depending on the days desired to cure, tests would be performed to find results at different times of the curing process.

- Assignments did involve DOT projects. It is required for a CMT to acquire a certification to be able to perform with the DOT.
