As the Hospitalist at Granville Medical Center, (Optimed Doctors) I have the responsibility of medically managing the hospital population. This role allows me to access, evaluate and treat patients who arrive via the emergency department for a variety of illnesses and concerns that include pulmonary issues, such as COPD exacerbations, pneumonia, asthma and influenza as well as general surgery concerns, anemia, orthopedic and ENT maladies. Many of the patients that I encounter present with schizophrenia, depression, anxiety and bipolar discorder which is often compounded with a substance abuse issue. I provide direct supervision to nursing staff and I work directly with the RBHA executive management team on budget, personnel supervision, and patient policies as well as lead the integration of the RICH Clinic with psychological services.

Trauma Surgery Nurse Practitioner: After completing my doctorate in Nursing, this transitional position allowed me to provide medical care and enhance my skills of the surgical NP through the role of the acute care nurse practitioner to patients who have undergone traumatic injuries. I also provided urgent care to incoming trauma patients in the ED which included acute stabilization that involved airway resuscitation and management, fluid resuscitation, and pain management. I worked with the trauma team as well as members of the orthopedic, cardiac, and neuro surgery team in an effort to provide comprehensive care to trauma patients upon arrival to ED, inpatient and in clinic. This position enabled me to participate in the daily care of the trauma patient. As a trauma surgery nurse practitioner, I managed the patient on the step-down unit in concert with attending physicians, residents, and fellows. My task included the day to day management and communication of the trauma patient in addition to chest tube management, simple surgery, evaluation of cardiac rhythms and treatment, fluid and electrolyte management, diabetic management and treatment as well as participation on the health care treatment team, which met to place the patient in the most suitable setting upon discharge.

Internal Medicine Nurse Practitioner: I had the privilege of providing home-based primary care to veterans. As the nurse practitioner, I assessed, treated, and provided comprehensive primary care to a population that is faced with complicated medical issues. Through my service, I enabled the elderly patient with multiple co morbidities to live in community with decreased hospital admissions. My position included the weekly home and medical assessment of home bound veterans. Through the role of the nurse practitioner, I would evaluate and treat the veteran in an attempt to maintain the optimal health care of the veteran. This position involved blood pressure, cholesterol, cardiac, and diabetic medical management as well as epileptic and mental health management. Many of the patients on my roster suffered from multiple complex co-morbidities such as congestive heart failure, advanced diabetes, cancer, and mental illness. I responded as needed with any urgent concerns the patient may have developed. I also performed wound and dressing changes as well as phlebotomy. I was a liaison between the patient and hospital and I coordinated my efforts with the primary physicians.
