Me by Myself
I often describe myself as an Internet Software Engineer with business sense. When I say that, it reflects some characteristics of my background as well as some of my outlook.
My educational background is as an electrical engineer. That, as well as other studies leads me to assume more of an engineering or systems approach to software design, as compared to the contrary approach, which mirrors much more a kind of creative writing approach. I like to think of myself as more of a software engineer than a software author. Being from a hardware engineering background, I like to approach problems with a receptive view toward using the most efficient tool to solve a problem if possible. Sometimes this means using a solution that is inherent in the UNIX system, the Apache Server, or an available library, instead of forcing a solution based on a higher-level language (sometimes with a shoe-horn). However, several years of experience managing people, systems, projects and programs encourages me to consider reasons other than technical ones for any particular approach. As an example, one of the most difficult things for an organization to procure is competent talent. Bearing this in mind, it often makes business/management sense to craft a solution that uses a talent that is more available. As an example, it is much easier to find talented programmers who can solve a problem by using PHP than to find systems people who are talented at crafting configuration files for Apache servers. I consider myself to be language agnostic, but realistically, I am more current in PHP than other languages. My Interests
I find that I am not happy being ‘pigeon-holed’ into working on a single element of a project. At the very least, I prefer to work the entire request-response cycle, including back-end.
Ideally, I am involved in technical decisions, managing developers or technology, and have interface with customers. I have a personal interest of late in Android, and serverless (Jamstack) technologies. I am also interested in remote work opportunities. My Goals and Desires
I am always interested in opportunities that can excite me intellectually, places and teams that I feel will be interesting and challenging, and occasional travel. So, my goal will be to find an opportunity that embodies all these things that I love. My Recent Work
I have recently build a light-framework for PHP, a light-framework for JAMSTACK projects, a single-page application, as well as some small applications to gain familiarity with Service Workers, This was capped by an extensive online application that interfaces with an online MMORPG to provide data visualization and executive control of teams. This particular application involved user-scripts for injecting controls, and extensive RESTful APIs and NoSql data stores. These were all completed during the COVID “vacation”. My Employment Status
I retired early in 2019 (Just before Covid), and realized within a short time that I did not like being retired. I dedicated my time to expanding my skill set by developing those items mentioned in “My Recent Work”. I want to find interesting work that will keep me happy for at least 5 years. I am comfortable working W-2, 1099, or Corp-to-Corp. James Jeffrey BURT
