CTO & Vice President Telecom Strategy & Architecture, HCLTECH, Sunnyvale, CA July 2020 - present

Responsibilities:

Led HCLTECH 5G/IoT, cloud native CNFs products design for both telcos and enterprises leveraging NFV/SDN for network orchestration, automation and resource optimization, AI/ML algorithms and cloud native tools & technologies.

Helped develop a cost-effective ERX software solution powered by the NFV acceleration on a SmartNIC (in collaboration with Intel), lowering TCO by 35% via freeing up compute capacity to accommodate new services and scale using existing server infrastructure.

Architected a cloud-native software solution architecture for 5G CNF products (AMF, NSSF, PCF, BSF, NWDAF,) for both telco applications and industry leading vertical use cases using the key enabling technologies (3GPP network slicing) and CI/CD best practices. Such a methodology proved to meet a wide variety of 5G network operators’ requirements.

Worked on the engagement model with the ERX partners to design and build 5G CNF products leveraging CI/CD digital pipeline, APM, CNI, Kubernetes and more.

Responsibilities:

Worked on several projects since joining the CTO office at Futurewei Technologies and ERX Software Solutions:

Led a sizable team (network architects and engineers) to enhance the commercial geo-distributed SDN controller architecture (enhanced KVS for distribution/persistence), MANO service orchestration stack (NFVO/VNFM), WAN optimization in collaboration with our ecosystem partners and multi-cloud adaptation for sharing resources (PNFs, VNFs, CNFs) in hybrid cloud environments (OpenStack, GCP, AWS, Azure, VMware, ..).

As part of this endeavor I was able to successfully demonstrate improved products performance via key differentiation and optimization techniques, helping expand our products footprint while making them commercially more viable, to support use cases such as, vCPE, 4G VoLTE and 5G Network Slicing capabilities.

Participated/led open source projects such as ONOS, ODL and ONAP. I led/chaired the ONAP architecture WG responsible for defining the software architecture for network automation platform, with emphasis on the hierarchical SDN controller, Multi-Cloud mediation layer (through APIs), and DCAE enhancements (ONAP Data Collection and Analytics Framework) to support real-time data streaming and events processing.

Proposed ONAP architecture enhancement to support not only the legacy infrastructure but also dynamic workflows in virtualized and containerized environments, leveraging cloud-native ecosystem software tools (Kubernetes, Istio, Envoy, Prometheus, Grafana), service orchestration standards (ETSI MANO) and network modeling tools (YANG, TOSCA, HEAT) across various cloud infrastructures incl. on-prem, private and public clouds (AWS, Azure and GCP, ..), hosting any mix of PNFs, VNFs and CNFs.

More recently, I started working on a cloud-driven network automation platform, a flagship project to develop a geo-distributed unified network telemetry end-to-end solution. Responsibilities:

Chaired the Architecture WG in ONAP to define a new cloud-ready open network automation platform architecture (based on merged ECOMP and Open-O platforms' capabilities/APIs).

Had to add new components, functional modules (mainly Microservices) and APIs to transform the ONAP initial software platform towards a Microservices-based architecture (a multi release project)

The ONAP platform architecture is driven by operators' SLAs/SLOs performance objectives (SA, HA, S3P,)

This platform was enhanced to support not only the Telco’s' monolithic legacy infrastructures but also the distributed Microservices-based architecture in multi-vendor and multi-tenant environments, leveraging cloud-native ecosystem tools and open standards (Kubernetes, Istio service mesh, PNDA/DCAE, ETSI NFV-compliant NFV-O) plus an External API that provides access for 3rd party frameworks such as MEF, TM Forum and potentially others, to facilitate interactions between operator BSS and relevant ONAP components.

Vice President, Network Architecture

Responsibilities:

As VP of architecture, continued to drive the engineering design and system architecture for JUNIPER's High IQ networks. This architecture was designed to incorporate the emerging technologies such as Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV). Besides engaging in internal projects, also led a team effort to ensure Juniper vision is closely aligned with the industry SDN/NFV direction. This encompasses IETF work across several WGs; the work at ETSI NFV ISG, the SDN/NFV work at Broadband Forum (BBF) and the OPNFV initiative.

Served as a member of both the Board of Directors and Technical Steering Committee (TSC) at OPNFV. At the same time, I served on a technical advisory role both at the Broadband Forum (BBF) and the ETSI NFV ISG. On this role I was primarily responsible for aligning the virtualized multi-service broadband network (MSBN) architecture, with the ETSI NFV Group Specifications, system requirements and architectural framework.

Early in my tenure at Juniper (2008-2013), initiated an architecture thought leadership program within the company to develop a unified architecture for the converged networks, encompassing both wireline and wireless access technologies. Successfully managed a sizable team (Engineering, PLM, SEs) to align Juniper product vision with customers technical roadmap.

This resulted in an end-to-end solution architecture (blueprint) driving a range of key carrier-grade networking products including the Mobile Next (Juniper packet core), the flagship mobile backhaul solutions (ACX family of products) plus the Cellular-WiFi interworking and traffic offload solutions.

Engaged in several R&D projects at IBM T.J Watson Research Center in White Plains while at SUNY. After the first year (late 1990) I took a sabbatical leave and joined the IBM Networking Division in Research Triangle Park, NC. Working at "Big Blue" was quite fascinating.

Despite my passion for having a career in academia I decided to resign from SUNY and joined IBM permanently.

At IBM (for about 4 years) I was engaged in designing an architecture for high speed packet switching network leveraging the IBM flagship fast packet switching fabric (aka PARIS).

This architecture laid the foundation for IBM future ATM networking products.

Also drove IBM-sponsored ATM research projects at Columbia University, NC State University and Michigan State University (MSU).
