I only worked at Republic Plastics for a couple of weeks before I had to move. My job task was to supervise

a machine that fluffed and cut raw material into foam plates. Some lines involved bagging the plates

by hand while others had a machine that bagged automatically. Then it was required to package the

product in boxes and stacked onto pallets. I also did quality assurance checks to verify the plates were

the right thickness and rigidity.

Radiological Control Technician

Smoky mountain solutions is a warehouse that specialized in washing potentially radioactive personal

protective equipment (coveralls, booties, respirators, etc). My job encompassed everything from

surveying the products and environment to enforcing proper rad handling procedures with workers. I did

radiological surveys on trucks and trailers, the entirety of the facilities, the air space, employees, and

everything else that had even a possibility of being contaminated. There were even occurrences of spills

and high level areas that I had the joy of decontaminating. All surveys had to be recorded, stored, and

maintained according to D.O.E guidelines and regulations. I was also allowed to edit, update, and review

the standard operating and rad procedures.

I worked with multiple types of rad instruments. Alpha, beta, dose meters, low background smear couters,

and laundry monitors are a few to list. I was responsible for the daily source checks and baselines when

needed. SMS is a small business company so a lot of meter repairs had to be done in house i.e. I was

taught to repair and maintain upkeep of most of the rad equipment in the building. I learned how to

replace and repair the mylar coverings (which are just a few micrometers thick). I even learned how to

replace the extremely fragile anode wiring that runs inside of certain meters. I was even able to shadow

a technician when she came to calibrate and repair equipment.
