As the Lead Debt Specialist in the Debt Management Unit, my responsibilities include consultation and coordination with the Unit Chief to assign cases to the Debt Specialists and provide workflow analysis based on those assignments. I review trends and identify any problematic situations, then take action to implement corrective actions. I teach the Debt Specialist and Debtor Contact Representative Course as well as Mentor the students after the formal training course. I conduct and facilitate Staff meetings and act as a liaison between Management and Staff. I also conduct Random Sample reviews of the Unit’s work product.

As a Debt Specialist in the Debt Management Unit, my responsibilities included making liability determinations for Social Security and Supplemental Security Income overpayments. I also effectuated adjustments by way of Partial Recovery from current benefits, Compromised Settlements, Tax Refund Withholding, Wage Garnishments or Administrative Offsets. I also processed Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 Bankruptcies as well as Civil Monetary Penalties.

As a Benefit Authorizer in the Payment Module my responsibilities included examining and evaluating material in the Social Security Retirement and Disability folders, as well as incoming correspondence in order to determine the necessary actions to be taken. If necessary, initiate further development via telephone contact or SSA systems to ascertain facts and obtain proofs. After the review, I would prepare documents to either suspend, adjust, or terminate benefits. Then notify the Beneficiary of the actions that were taken on their behalf. Mentored Benefit authorizer Trainees and provided progress reports for Management review. Provided customer service by answering questions, making appointments, and updating records for the general public on the Toll-Free 800 service provided by the Social Security Administration.
