Resume:

My name is Diane Cartwright.

I started out in healthcare as a CNA in 1986. I discovered my love of patients and was able to pursue my nursing career by obtaining my Licensed Practical Nurse certificate in 1988. For 10 years I worked in a variety of fields including long term care, home health care, and in the hospital in general med-surg nursing and the intensive care unit. I was given an opportunity to work in the emergency department and there discovered my passion for the ever changing, fast paced emergency department.

I decided I wanted more responsibility in this field so went back to school and received my ADN in 1998. I worked for 6 months on a med-surg/oncology unit and was then able to apply for a transfer to the emergency department. For the next 17 years I lived my nursing passion, from a staff nurse to a charge nurse in the departments I worked in. I was able to do travel nursing for several years and gain valuable experiences in every emergency department I worked in. Through my years as an ER nurse I discovered one of my favorite patients to care for was the cardiac patient, so when I decided to leave the ER, it was for a position on a cardiac decision unit.

During my time on the cardiac floor, I was able to meet and work with several advanced practice nurse practitioners. I was impressed and amazed at the level with which they cared for their patients. I was encouraged by these advanced providers to pursue my advanced practice degree. I was able to complete my Bachelor's degree in 2019 and went on to complete my Master's degree in 2022.

Professional Goals

I have been in the nursing profession since 1986, first as a CNA, then an LPN for 10 years, and then as an associate degree registered nurse since 1998. Once I received my associate degree in nursing, I realized that my philosophy of nursing would guide my career path for the rest of my working career. After 18 years of working in the emergency department, I discovered my passion for the cardiac patient and transitioned to an inpatient cardiac unit where I worked alongside a great group of nurse practitioners who encouraged me to continue my education into an advanced practice nurse.

Personal values that I portray in my nursing practice are honesty, nurturing, versatility, and diversity. I believe that nursing is a profession based on my communication abilities in responding to the needs of my patients as well as the ability to interact with an interdisciplinary team to achieve the best possible outcomes for my patients. As a Family Nurse Practitioner, I will have a commitment to preventative measures for a healthy lifestyle and the knowledge to educate and empower my patients to make educated healthcare choices. I have a strong passion for patient-centered care as this allows patients an ability to take an active role in their healthcare choices and outcome.

Some of my short and long-term goals include preparation for and taking my AANP certification exam. I am currently a student member of The American Association of Nurse Practitioners and plan on continuing my membership as an advanced provider. Once my MSN program requirements are completed, I will apply to the certification board to take my certification exam. After I have passed the certification exam, I will apply for my state license as an advanced practice registered nurse.

Once I enter the field as an APRN, my goal is to gain employment and improve on my experience by working alongside an experienced mentor. As I transition into my new role, I plan on using any opportunity to improve on my knowledge and skills. I will learn the electronic medical record system of my employer and keep current on evidence-based research as it applies to my care of the patients. As I progress in my new role, I plan on advancing my communication skills, my efficiency, and optimizing my patient care skills. With time in my new role, I hope to be able to be a mentor to APRN students and new nurse practitioners in the future.

Professional Nursing Philosophy

My philosophy is based on providing competent, empathetic, and compassionate care to the best of my ability. This philosophy stems from the values and beliefs instilled in me during my early childhood. These values and beliefs are accompanied by trustworthiness, respect, and compassion, and that is what drove me into this profession and what is currently driving me as I continue to provide care to my patients, family and my work community.

It is my belief that in order to keep in stride with what my philosophy is, my education will have to play a very significant role. Continued education about issues related to patient care is very important to me. Through extensive research a wealth of information is found, and this information can be transposed to the knowledge I already have, thereby greatly enhancing my skills and allowing me to be able to provide optimal quality care.

I believe that the cultural beliefs, ethnic background and sexual orientation of patients and families should be respected, and I am confident in my ability to continue my profession without showing any form of discrimination. I am a supporter of strong family values within the community and the world. I strive to be an educator, an advocate, a mentor, and a promoter of disease awareness, and good health practices. I believe that nursing is more than just a career, it is a privilege taken upon by persons who are passionate about using their knowledge and skills to help those who are dealing with acute or chronic health issues.
