RESEARCH PROJECTS

• The Shuar Indigenous Community

The research has been carried out in Situ, Ecuador, using a methodology of observation and coexistence. It was critical to determine the magnitude of the project because this is a community of approximately 60,000 people spread over 4 regions of the Ecuadorian Amazon. Indigenous people's human rights and access to education are discussed infrequently on a worldwide scale. For the scholar, overcoming cultural barriers and realizing that indigenous people are subjects with specific demands, and expectations that support their way of life was a critical first step.

• Pluricultural Research

Presented at the XIII World Congress of Education, Montclair State University, New Jersey on October 10-11, 2019.

Laws in Ecuador addressing Interculturality, and Pluri-nationality were incorporated in the 2008’s Constitution reform but indigenous communities believe that they have not yet been put into practice or are completely ignored. The interactions between the various groups and the concepts such as culture, nation and identity have become a major political discourse in Ecuadorian society. As a result, the word “Pluri-cultural”, in relation to education, acquires a negative meaning that is associated with forceful change to the identity, beliefs and vision of each community. Education became a very difficult issue to address, especially in indigenous communities that are isolated and have expectations to be taught in their native language and not Spanish.
