ASSESSMENT OF BILE SALT HYDROLYASE

ACTIVITY OF PROBIOTICS

Bile salt hydrolyase (BSH) activity in probiotic strains correlated with the ability to lower serum cholesterol levels in hypercholesterolemia patients. The Objective of the study was to evaluate the BSH activity and the cholesterol reduction potential of three potential probiotics isolations

(F902, M040 & F040). Morphological and biochemical characterization carried out for all the bacterial isolates and all were fount to be lactic acid bacteria. The antibacterial activity of the probiotics assessed against different clinical isolates, The BSH producing ability of the probiotics was assessed in VITRO(plate assay) and furthur confirmed by PCR amplification of BSH encoding gene. Furthermore, the three probiotics strains had grown in the MRS broth added with cholesterol revealing their cholesterol tolerance ability which is one of the prerequisites for cholesterol reduction.
