Child Protective Services Investigator III
Department of Family and Protective Services Brownwood, TX March 2013 - February 2020
As a CPS Investigator, I investigated reports of child abuse and/or neglect.
I worked in a Mobile Investigations unit where cases are assigned, and the Investigator is responsible for managing his or her own case load.
Investigations requires collecting evidence, conducting interviews, collaboration with other agencies, and formulation of a disposition as to whether abuse or neglect did occur and what actions will be taken.
An Investigator is either responsible for referring a family for services within the community for help, referring the family for services through the Department, or removing the child from an unsafe situation and placing in an environment that can be considered safe while the Department and Courts work with the parents. The Investigator often places the child with family or works with a Child Placing Agency to ensure that the child is in a safe environment where all of the child's needs can be met and the child is safe while the parents receive the needed services or the child is determined adoptable by a lack of effort or success by the parents by the parents.
Essentially, the Investigator determines safety and is continually assessing safety and risk to the child.
The Investigator acts in accordance to those findings and within the legal guidelines of the Texas Family Code.
The Investigator works with investigative partners such as all levels of Law Enforcement, Medical Professionals, Mental Health Professional, Corrections Professionals, and the Courts among many other partners.
The Investigator is often required to write Affidavits and interact with the courts through the active and ongoing protection of the child or children.
The investigator is a first responder in reaching a child who may have been abused or neglected and must have strong skills that include analytical thinking, conflict resolution, critical thinking, and the ability to make quick and precise decisions in a high stress and high stake environment where the safety and well-being of a child depends on the abilities and actions of the investigator.
(I did leave for 18 months to pursue an opportunity that would offer me even more training in my field, then returned to the Department.) Children's Advocacy Center Program Director and Forensic Interviewer.
Program Director and Forensic Interviewer
Eastland County Children's Advocacy Center Eastland, TX January 2018 - August 2019
I left employment with DFPS for a span of 18 months to pursue more training to become better at my job as a child Investigator and in working with abused children.
I was offered and accepted a position as the Program Director and Forensic Interviewer at the Eastland County Children's Advocacy Center.
During that time span I was responsible for the daily operations and oversight of the Children's Advocacy Center.
The program was funded by VOCA and other grants which allowed me to become knowledgeable in reading/ following grants, budgeting for grant award amounts, filing for monthly reimbursements, payment modifications, and maintaining appropriate percentages as allowed by grant guidelines.
The Children' Advocacy Center maintained a staff of three and provided services to children and families referred by Law Enforcement or DFPS.
The Children's Advocacy Center offered Forensic Interviews, SANE Exams, Counseling, Legal Services, Protective Orders, financial services, court accompaniment, and many other services as deemed necessary and as allowed by grants.
I received training in Leadership, attended Crimes Against Children, and other Conferences, and was trained as a Forensic Interviewer and advocate in all areas of safety and well-being.
A Forensic Interviewer conducts a legally defensible interview using a structured narrative process to interview a child who may have has been sexually abused or otherwise abused or neglected.
The child is interviewed in a non-leading manner in a child friendly environment, helping them speak of their abuse without fear.
The interview is conducted for prosecution purposes and is both video and audio recorded to hopefully avoid the child having to testify in court at a later date.
The Forensic Interviewer must be prepared to testy as an outcry witness or as an Expert Witness at a later date if the alleged perpetrator is prosecuted.
The case was tracked throughout the entire process by working with a Multiple Disciplinary Team which I facilitated the meetings which included members of Law Enforcement, Medical, Legal, Prosecution, and Advocates among others.
This experience has proved to be invaluable and has enhanced my skills across the board. During my time I became trained as a Family Advocate, Domestic Violence Advocate, and a Sexual Assault Advocate which only added to my skillset in working with children and families dealing with these issues.

ONGOING TRAINING
I have always sought out ongoing training and will continue to seek any training offered that is pertinent to our field and helping children/youth. Below is just a few of the trainings I have attended, there have been so many that I have recently begun working on my CV to have a record to present.
I am a lifelong learner and look forward to an opportunity to learn new things, share with new people, and grow in a new setting. I would love to be considered for a new and dynamic position where I may utilize my skills to be of service. I do feel strongly that I could meet and exceed the job requirements as described in your job listing as a mentor. I am seeking long-term employment and can be quite flexible with my schedule as my children are grown and being committed to my career is one of my favorite things in life. I seek daily, a strong sense of accomplishment and strive to always make a difference to others through a job well done and accomplishing the objectives as set forth by my employer both daily and long-term.
My background is diverse in that it includes holding the position a Property Manager for 2 different complexes that accepted both private renters and Section 8 Clients. I then earned my bachelor’s degree in criminal justice with a Concentration on Human Services so that I could obtain employment as an Investigator with the Department of Family and Protective Services. My next adventure offered me anew skillset that I could not turn down at the Eastland County Children’s Advocacy Center as the Program Director. In my time at the CAC I managed five employees and appropriately funds for our multiple state and federal grants along with private funders and fundraising. During that time, I attended many Leadership Conferences in Austin and Crimes Against Children Conferences in Dallas. I became a formally child advocate well trained in Trauma Informed Care and TBRI, as well as earning very important training as a Forensic Interviewer, Levels I, II, III, and multi-sessional interviewing. I conducted many audio and video recorded interviews for DFPS, Law Enforcement, and for Prosecution. I was able to spend around eight months working in Foster Care Case Management for New Horizons before a death in the family and then about the same amount of time working for 2INgage in Foster Care Case Management, Reporting to Courts, Attorney Ad Litems, CASA, Offending Parents, Foster Families, Adoption Families, DFPS Caseworkers and Judges. My work is through and my documentation is precise, factual and accurate. I am currently working at Rite of Passage, but would be truly honored to be considered for this job at Ron Jackson. It is my desire to start my Masters in Forensic Psychology closer to the summer to further my skillset in working with troubled youth.
Other Conferences and Workshops to Mention: 2013 and 2019 Crimes Against Children Conference offering multiple sessions over four days of sessions, Champions for Children Conference in the years including 2015 to 2018, Family Advocacy Training, Sexual Assault Advocacy Training, Domestic Violence Advocacy Training, Teamwork and the Multiple Disciplinary Team Approach Training, Managing an MDT at the CAC, Multiple Courses in Serving Families where either the parents or children have significant mental health issues, Understanding Psychotropic Medications, Determining Injuries from Abuse or Accident, Burn Injuries, Child Fatality Investigations, Sex Trafficking Task Force Investigations, National Center for Missing and Exploited Children Trainings, DPS Human Trafficking Trainings, Cultural Diversity, Active Shooter Trainings, Conflict Resolution in the Workplace Training, Effective Management Skills, Working in a High Stakes High Stress Environment, Secondary and Vicarious Trauma, Self-Care Workshops, Effectively Managing Caseloads, and Interpreting Policy and Legislation. I am a self-starter who is always highly motivated to locate resources in the community and advocate for my youth and clients, maintaining complete and accurate records along with a strong bond of trust as when a youth does have crisis or issues needing help.
