As a Registered Nurse I have had the privilege of caring for patients in both acute and long-term care settings. My acute care experience includes but is not limited extensively to ER and ICU, but in the Med-Surg, Recovery, Pediatric, and Obstetric areas as well. My experience as a Nurse Practitioner has been in Urgent care, Emergency Medicine, Occupational medicine, Family Practice, Hospitalist medicine, Long-term care and rehabilitation medicine.
Through my experience, along with developing advanced nursing skills, I have learned to lead and work cohesively with all other members of the healthcare team. This experience has allowed me to network and develop strong relationships with healthcare providers in multiple areas of specialty and expertise.
I hold myself accountable for striving daily to improve patient care in any way possible. As a healthcare provider, I accomplish this through the growth of my own knowledge and skills and by assisting with the learning and development of other team members.
As a Legal Nurse Consultant, I utilize my Nursing expertise to consult on the following types of cases: Medical and Nursing Malpractice, Personal Injury, General Negligence, Insurance Defense, Product Liability, Toxic Torts and Environment, Workers’ Compensation and Workplace Injury Cases as well as Criminal Cases. Responsible for all aspects of nursing services in a 146-bed skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility. Responsibilities included the staffing assignments and supervision of over 100 employees, staff competencies, training, policy/process review and improvements, compliance requirements for state and federal regulations, and the coordination of resident care with therapy services. Additional duties included but were not limited to the supervision of the employee/resident infection control program, resident wound care and skin assessment program, incidents/accidents, restorative program, minimum data sets and care plans.

Co-Founder
The Long-Term Care Nursing & Rehab Institute was founded by myself and Donna Campbell, M.D. with the mission to promote long-term care nursing and develop recognition of long-term care nursing as a nursing specialty. The Institute provides a nation-wide specialty certification exam, which is offered after the long-term care nurse completes an intensive 3-day leadership and skill-based conference. Our primary goal is to improve the care of long-term care residents through the enhanced knowledge and skills of the long-term care nurse. This program was approved for 24.5 CEU’s through the Texas Nurses Association.
Dr. Campbell and I are the co-founders of the National Association
for Long-Term Care Nurses.

Worked full-time (transitioned to prn in 2013) at this busy level IV trauma facility as an emergency department charge nurse. My duties remained the same as noted below for these areas with increased involvement in hospital-wide billing, reimbursement, budget, education and risk-management issues. As Infection Control Coordinator, I was responsible for hospital–wide infection control education and practices. These duties included serving as the Chairman of the Infection Control Committee and the reporting of Infection Control Statistics to the Medical Staff and Board of Trustees.
1995 – 2001 Yoakum Community Hospital Yoakum, TX
E.R./I.C.U. Nurse Manager; Trauma Coordinator
I was responsible for all facets in the operation of these two departments including: staffing, competencies, organizing and providing continuing education, QI, statistics, maintaining current policies, procedures, protocols, meetings, equipment, budget, supplies, and staff physician support.
As Trauma Coordinator, I was responsible for all Trauma QI, statistics, downloading to the State Trauma Registry, Multi-disciplinary committee meetings and any other trauma issues. With this position, I gained a vast amount of knowledge on EMTALA and have multiple resources in this area. I organized the first drinking related accident simulation for the local high school and worked with the Regional Advisory Council on Trauma to implement region-wide Hazmat education.
I assisted with the nurse staffing throughout the facility as House Supervisor. I also assisted with general nursing education. Throughout my employment at YCH, I enjoyed floating and assisting in all nursing areas.

Although I remained employed at Yoakum Community Hospital, I also worked as a field nurse for the Cuero branch of Crossroads Home Health during this time. During this period, I was also employed by Critical Care nursing agency in Nashville, TN. While employed through this agency, I worked as a staff nurse primarily in I.C.U.’s at various Nashville hospitals, but I also worked in med-surg, obstetrics, mental health units, day surgery, and a locked-down hospital prison unit.

I started as Cuero Community Hospital’s first PNT in 1988. After graduation from the R.N. program in 1990, I worked as a charge nurse/House Supervisor and floated to all nursing areas except for surgery for one year. I transferred into the I.C.U. in 1991 and functioned as the night I.C.U. charge nurse in a 6 bed I.C.U. I was responsible for after hours and weekend recoveries and the monitoring of all med-surg telemetry patients. I continued to float and assist in all nursing areas as needed during this time. I was regularly called to assist and provide support in the emergency department.
