SASOL (Base Chemicals & Explosives):

Role: Explosives Engineer & Contract

Manager 03/2015 - 05/2019

Town: Karibib, Namibia

Work Description: In May 2019, Mr Heikky decided to pursue entrepreneurship on a full time basis by resigning from his job at Sasol Namibia. His focus was mainly on manufacturing projects that would see value addition to local raw materials and import substitution becoming a reality in Namibia and as a result creating permanent jobs for the youth. One of the projects he embarked on, was to setup a Ceramic tiles manufacturing plant in Tsumeb, a first of its kind in the country, using cutting edge technology imported from Italy and sourcing raw materials such as clay, quartz, and feldspar from within the country. Starting this project from scratch, investing his time and resources, he managed to attract the attention of the Development Bank of Namibia (DBN), the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) from South Africa, and Konigstein Capital as an equity financier. This project was awarded Best Innovative Idea by DBN in December 2017 with award prize worth N$500,000 (newspaper articles are available on internet for reference). The project was further awarded N$ 1.1 million from DBN’s Project Preparation Fund for further research work. Unfortunately due to the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak in 2020, the project was put on hold because of the local market that was found insufficient to support the project when fully operational. Due to family commitment (married with two kids), Mr Heikky then decided to make his way back into the mining industry, hence his current role at Ongwe Minerals Ltd.

Sasol Nitro, a subsidiary of Sasol Chemical Industries, was contracted to undertake blasting activities at QKR Navachab Gold Mine. Mr Heikky was appointed as the Explosives Engineer (Blasting & Explosives) on site. His job was to:

Plan all blast design and drilling parameters, monitor and review all blasts undertaken by the mine looking at factors such as: fragmentation, powder factor, & compile pre and post blast reports.

Coordinate charging and blasting activities – liaison with Navachab Engineers and Managers to ensure targets are met and optimization of the blast is achieved.

Conduct pre and post blast valuation on the blast block, carrying out blast quality control and efficiencies through video and photo recording, fragmentation analysis, VOD measurements, and vibrations & air blast monitoring.

Operate in a safe and efficient manner in accordance to the company's and client's Safety policies and procedures i.e. adherence to the ISO 14001, ISO 9001 and OHSAS 18001 standards, and the Mining Regulations i.e. Explosives Regulations and the Labor Act.

Conducting training sessions on all personnel involved in explosives handling and blasting, including Junior/graduate mining engineers;

Operation of a total quality explosives and face operations management system including new product trials.

Identifying and analyzing opportunities for value addition to improve customer operations - pursuing new initiatives, technology, and techniques to improve rock mechanics, drill and blast performance as part of continuous improvement.

Blast modeling for Open Pit – Development of drill and blast systems and outlining parameters for design, design procedures, strategies for continuous improvement and risk management and assessments.

Ensuring hanging wall and sidewall rock stability through proper blasting methods.
